Merlin and IAI Collaborate to Advance Autonomous Flight in Commercial Cargo Aviation
Merlin and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) have entered into a strategic partnership to jointly develop, integrate, and certify artificial intelligence-powered autonomous flight technology for commercial cargo aircraft. This collaboration unites Merlin, a leading developer of aviation autonomy systems, with IAI, a specialist in passenger-to-freighter (P2F) aircraft conversions. The memorandum of understanding initiates a phased cooperation encompassing engineering, aircraft integration, regulatory preparation, platform selection, and market evaluation. Rather than designing a new aircraft, the partnership aims to establish a pathway toward civil certification of autonomous capabilities on existing large commercial cargo aircraft.
Integrating Autonomy with Established Expertise
The alliance reflects a broader industry trend toward incorporating artificial intelligence into the flight deck to enhance pilot operations while adhering to stringent certification standards. IAI’s extensive experience in aircraft engineering, certification, avionics, maintenance, and P2F conversions positions it as a critical partner for Merlin. IAI is recognized globally for its conversion programs, supplying freighter aircraft to major operators such as Amazon, DHL, and Atlas Air, and is actively expanding its Boeing 777 conversion network to meet rising demand.
Merlin’s autonomy platform, branded under the Condor product family, is designed to assist flight crews by managing aircraft systems, monitoring the operational environment, and handling communications. The system supports pilots by allowing them to concentrate on decision-making during flight, working alongside rather than replacing them within existing cockpit operations as certification advances.
Boaz Levy, Chairman of IAI, emphasized the significance of the collaboration, highlighting IAI’s history of aerospace innovation and its commitment to advancing next-generation aviation technologies. He noted that autonomy is poised to play an increasingly vital role in the future of aviation, enhancing safety, efficiency, and operational flexibility.
Targeting Cargo Aviation as the First Autonomous Flight Frontier
Merlin’s focus on cargo aircraft aligns with the dynamics of the global air freight market, where a substantial number of passenger aircraft are converted into dedicated freighters. Boeing’s latest long-term cargo forecast projects the global fleet of large freighters to grow from approximately 2,340 aircraft today to nearly 3,900 by 2043, with over 2,800 new production and P2F conversion deliveries expected during this period.
Merlin views these conversion programs as strategic opportunities to integrate autonomous systems during aircraft modification, rather than retrofitting them post-delivery. The company also cites ongoing pilot shortages and sustained growth in global air cargo demand as key drivers encouraging operators to adopt innovative operational technologies.
This partnership between Merlin and IAI marks a significant step toward the introduction of certifiable autonomous flight technologies in commercial cargo aviation, potentially setting a precedent for broader applications across the industry.
