SMBC Aviation Capital Orders CFM LEAP-1A Engines for 35 Airbus A320neo Jets

SMBC Aviation Capital Confirms Order for CFM LEAP-1A Engines to Power 35 Airbus A320neo Jets
SMBC Aviation Capital has entered into a definitive agreement with CFM International to acquire LEAP-1A engines for 35 Airbus A320neo family aircraft. This transaction reinforces the Dublin-based lessor’s enduring collaboration with the engine manufacturer. With this latest procurement, SMBC Aviation Capital’s portfolio now includes over 750 aircraft equipped with LEAP and CFM56 engines, spanning those in service, owned, managed, or on order.
Advancing Fuel Efficiency and Environmental Goals
The lessor highlighted that the adoption of the new-generation LEAP-1A engines will enable airlines to address the growing demand for more fuel-efficient aircraft. These engines contribute to the aviation sector’s broader decarbonization objectives by delivering lower fuel consumption, reduced emissions, and quieter operation. CFM International has successfully delivered more than 10,000 LEAP engines worldwide and continues to implement enhancements aimed at improving durability and maintenance across its engine family.
Industry Context and Ongoing Challenges
This order arrives amid heightened industry scrutiny regarding engine durability. CFM International recently secured regulatory approval for durability upgrades to its LEAP-1B engines, which power Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, following reports of premature wear. Although the LEAP-1A engines for the A320neo family have not faced comparable concerns, CFM remains committed to ongoing improvements to meet the reliability and efficiency expectations of airlines and lessors.
The competitive environment for A320neo engine selection remains fluid. British Airways recently opted for Pratt & Whitney’s PW1100G GTF engines for up to 63 Airbus A320neo jets, reflecting sustained confidence in the rival powerplant despite its own history of durability issues. Concurrently, BOC Aviation’s significant order for 300 CFM International LEAP engines—including both LEAP-1A and LEAP-1B variants—demonstrates continued demand for CFM’s technology amid close market scrutiny of engine performance and reliability.
As airlines and lessors adapt to evolving operational demands and environmental imperatives, engine selection continues to be a pivotal consideration. SMBC Aviation Capital’s latest order underscores the enduring appeal of the LEAP-1A engine and the critical role of ongoing innovation in engine technology to satisfy industry expectations.
