Advancements in Accessibility at SEA Milan Airports
SEA Milan Airports is intensifying its focus on accessibility, sustainability, and digital innovation across its Malpensa (MXP) and Linate (LIN) hubs. In an exclusive interview with International Airport Review, Michele Parietti, Head of PRM Assistance, detailed how the integration of advanced technologies is poised to significantly enhance the passenger experience, particularly for those with reduced mobility.
Parietti, whose background spans consultancy and retail, views airports fundamentally as service organizations. He emphasizes the importance of managing and engaging staff to deliver exceptional service to passengers. According to him, the complexity of airport operations necessitates not only high-quality service but also the seamless incorporation of innovative technologies to meet evolving demands.
Enhancing Accessibility for All Passengers
In response to the increasing need for assistance among passengers with reduced mobility (PRMs), SEA is piloting an autonomous assist vehicle developed in collaboration with an Italian start-up. This self-driving solution is designed to transport disabled passengers within the terminal, reducing dependence on traditional escorted services and fostering greater passenger autonomy.
Beyond mobility assistance, SEA’s innovation team is exploring technologies aimed at supporting visually impaired and deaf travelers. These include indoor navigation systems, sign-language integration, and AI-driven assistance tools. Parietti highlights the airport’s ambition to move beyond conventional escorted services toward solutions that empower passengers to navigate independently. This approach aligns with broader industry trends, exemplified by partnerships such as those between DAAV and Arlande, which focus on advancing inclusive mobility.
SEA’s methodology involves identifying promising technologies through industry events and targeted research, followed by stakeholder engagement via trial site visits at its airports. Parietti explains that initiating trials allows the airport to demonstrate the practical application of new solutions, ensuring that procurement and implementation are closely aligned with strategic and operational objectives.
Digital Innovation and Real-Time Operational Management
SEA has recently contracted Thales Group to implement a comprehensive digital platform across both airports. This system will aggregate operational data from airfield, terminal, and accessibility services, delivering real-time situational awareness and enabling workflow automation. These digital enhancements are expected to optimize operational efficiency and further improve the overall passenger experience.
A Holistic Approach to Sustainability
Parietti underscores that SEA’s commitment to sustainability extends well beyond the adoption of electric vehicles or ground power units. While recent investments include electric apron vehicles, the airport’s sustainability strategy is comprehensive, aiming to embed environmental responsibility throughout all facets of its operations.
Industry Challenges and Wider Impact
Despite these advancements positioning SEA Milan Airports as a leader in accessibility, challenges persist. Ensuring compliance with evolving regulatory frameworks and integrating new technologies without disruption remain ongoing priorities. Nevertheless, the market response has been favorable, with increased satisfaction reported among travelers with disabilities and a strengthened reputation for the airport. This enhanced standing is likely to attract a more diverse passenger base.
Competitors are closely observing SEA’s initiatives, with many expected to invest in similar accessibility features to maintain competitiveness. Some have already begun leveraging their own technological advancements in marketing efforts, reflecting a growing industry-wide emphasis on inclusive travel.
As SEA Milan Airports continues to pioneer in this space, its efforts exemplify a broader transformation within the aviation sector—one in which accessibility, sustainability, and digital innovation are integral to the future of air travel.
