Aerium Innovation Summit Highlights Aviation Growth and Challenges in Cambria County
A National Spotlight on Aviation and Drone Technology
JOHNSTOWN — The Aerium Innovation Summit, currently taking place at the John Murtha Johnstown-Cambria County Airport, is drawing national attention to Cambria County’s emerging status as a center for aviation and drone technology. Local officials emphasize that the event not only showcases the region’s potential but also brings to light the challenges it faces in expanding its role within the industry.
Cambria County Commissioner Tom Chernisky underscored the summit’s role in demonstrating the power of public-private partnerships to advance aviation and create sustainable career pathways for students. “This is proof that collaboration works,” Chernisky stated, highlighting the cooperative efforts driving the region’s progress.
During the summit’s opening session, state Senator Wayne Langerholc and state Representative Jim Rigby expressed strong support for Aerium’s initiatives, particularly the Drone814 emergency response program. This innovative project utilizes drones to deliver critical medical supplies beyond the visual line of sight, enhancing emergency response capabilities. “Johnstown is the epicenter of aviation, and it’s evident in the collaboration across so many levels,” Langerholc remarked.
Investment and Infrastructure Development
The region’s growing momentum has attracted significant investment. Earlier this year, Houston-based Horizon Aerobotics selected Johnstown as the location for its primary remote operation center, a development expected to generate approximately 250 jobs at the airport campus, according to Aerium Executive Director Glenn Ponas. Horizon Aerobotics will be among the inaugural tenants of the planned 63,000-square-foot Regional Jet Hangar and Innovation Center, which is designed to serve as a hub for regional jet maintenance and advanced air mobility operations.
The summit also marked the grand opening of the airport’s new exhibit hall, a facility intended to foster collaboration among regional partners and cultivate an innovation ecosystem extending from Johnstown to a national scale. Commissioner Chernisky and airport manager Cory Cree officiated the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Ponas emphasized the importance of workforce development in sustaining this growth, noting that the jobs created by Horizon Aerobotics represent “just the tip of the summit.”
Addressing Workforce and Competitive Challenges
Despite the positive developments, the summit highlighted several critical challenges. Workforce development remains a pressing concern, as the region must train and retain skilled professionals to meet the increasing demands of the aviation sector. Additionally, competition from other regional aviation hubs is intensifying, with neighboring communities actively seeking to attract similar investments and talent. Continued funding and support from government and industry stakeholders are deemed essential to maintain Cambria County’s upward trajectory.
Market responses have been encouraging, with aviation companies and job seekers showing heightened interest in the region. Horizon Aerobotics CEO Denver Hopkins praised the unique level of local support, reflecting on the readiness of Johnstown’s officials and educators to embrace advanced drone operations. “We met not just people who accepted our vision, but people who shared it before we even walked through the door,” Hopkins said.
As the summit progresses, U.S. Senator Dave McCormick is scheduled to tour the airport and deliver the keynote address, bringing the event to a close with a focus on both celebrating recent achievements and recognizing the ongoing efforts required to secure Cambria County’s future in aviation.
