AERO 2026 to Showcase Advances in Sustainable Aviation
Sustainability at the Forefront of Europe’s Premier Aviation Event
AERO 2026, Europe’s foremost general aviation trade fair, will place sustainability at the heart of its agenda as the aviation industry intensifies efforts to decarbonise and innovate. Scheduled to take place from 22 to 25 April 2026 in Friedrichshafen, Germany, the event will highlight cutting-edge developments in propulsion systems, alternative fuels, lightweight materials, and operational technologies designed to enhance efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
The organisers have emphasised that AERO 2026 will provide a comprehensive overview of how the aviation sector is responding to evolving regulatory frameworks and market demands for greener solutions, while simultaneously supporting the growth of air transport and recreational flying. This focus on sustainability aligns with projections that the global market for sustainable aviation technology will expand from USD 7.75 billion in 2023 to USD 22.81 billion by 2032, reflecting a compound annual growth rate of 13.5 percent. This surge is driven by advancements in electric and hydrogen propulsion, sustainable aviation fuels, and energy-efficient aircraft design.
Innovation and Industry Engagement
A notable feature of the 2026 event will be the Innovation Stage located in Hall A7, where leading experts will deliver presentations on sustainable aviation during the first two days. Surrounding this platform, the Innovation Area will showcase companies unveiling pioneering projects and technologies that are shaping the future of flight. Tobias Bretzel, Show Director of AERO at fairnamic GmbH, underscored the centrality of sustainability to the event’s mission, recalling AERO’s longstanding dedication to emerging technologies, including the launch of the e-Flight Expo in 2009, which spotlighted electric aviation.
“This year’s AERO Friedrichshafen puts sustainable aviation at the centre of the show,” Bretzel stated, highlighting the expanded Innovation Stage and the redesigned exhibition space devoted to future technologies.
Another new initiative, the AERO Sustainable Aviation Trail, will guide attendees to over 100 exhibitors focused on environmentally friendly solutions. Marked by distinctive green-and-white windsocks, these stands will present innovations ranging from advanced propulsion systems and alternative fuels to digital navigation tools that optimise flight routes and reduce fuel consumption.
Challenges and Market Developments
General aviation continues to play a pivotal role in the development and testing of sustainable technologies. Smaller aircraft platforms enable faster and more cost-effective innovation before these solutions are scaled for commercial aviation. Nonetheless, the sector faces significant challenges, including the need for further advancements in structural materials and thermal management for long-haul hydrogen systems, as well as the commercial viability of hybrid-electric systems for regional aircraft.
Market players are responding with increased investment and innovation. Pan Européenne Air Service recently placed the first firm order for Aura Aero’s hybrid regional aircraft, signalling growing confidence in the market. However, structural barriers persist in certain regions. For instance, Azul CEO John Rodgerson has noted that Brazil’s aviation market, despite its potential, remains underdeveloped compared to other countries.
Sustainability efforts at AERO 2026 extend beyond the exhibition itself. Messe Friedrichshafen has installed a 5.5-megawatt rooftop photovoltaic system across ten buildings, now the largest solar installation in the Lake Constance region. This system is expected to supply a significant portion of the venue’s electricity needs and reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 2,735 tonnes annually.
In conjunction with the trade fair, the fourth AERO Hydrogen & Battery Summit will be held on 21 and 22 April, bringing together industry leaders and researchers to discuss advances in battery technology, hydrogen propulsion, and pathways toward carbon-neutral aviation.
