AirAsia Places Largest Order for 150 Airbus A220 Aircraft
Malaysian ultra low-cost carrier AirAsia has announced a landmark order for 150 Airbus A220-300 aircraft, representing the largest single purchase in the history of the A220 program. Scheduled for delivery beginning in 2028, this deal propels total firm orders for the A220 beyond the 1,000 mark, a significant milestone for Airbus amid intense competition in the narrowbody aircraft market.
A New High-Density Configuration
The aircraft ordered by AirAsia will feature a high-density configuration accommodating 160 seats, making the airline the launch customer for this variant. Traditionally, the A220-300 is certified for up to 149 seats, but AirAsia’s version incorporates an additional overwing exit to increase capacity. This configuration is distinct from the proposed A220-500, a stretched model that Airbus is still evaluating but has not yet committed to developing. The uncertainty surrounding the A220-500’s future presents potential challenges for airlines seeking larger capacity, yet AirAsia’s substantial order underscores strong confidence in the current A220 lineup.
AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes characterized the order as a decisive move aligned with the airline’s long-term vision. He emphasized that the decision reflects both strategic discipline and ambitious growth plans, stating that the A220 will enable the carrier to unlock new markets and routes. Fernandes highlighted the enduring partnership with Airbus, which has been integral to AirAsia’s development over more than two decades, and described the order as a significant milestone in the airline’s ongoing journey.
Strategic Role Within AirAsia’s Fleet
The A220s are expected to play a pivotal role in AirAsia’s network across the ASEAN region and into Central Asia, allowing the airline to redeploy larger aircraft to longer-haul routes. Currently, AirAsia’s Malaysian subsidiary operates primarily Airbus A320-family aircraft, including both classic (ceo) and next-generation (neo) models. The airline also holds orders for over 400 A321 variants, all configured with 236 seats in a single-class layout.
The introduction of the 160-seat A220-300 suggests a gradual replacement of some older 180-seat A320s. Although this represents a modest reduction in per-aircraft capacity, the A220’s superior fuel efficiency and lower operating costs are expected to yield substantial operational benefits. AirAsia’s decision to diversify its fleet, despite industry trends favoring fleet commonality, reflects confidence in managing multiple aircraft types effectively to support its growth ambitions.
Market Impact and Industry Implications
Market response to AirAsia’s order has been broadly positive, reinforcing Airbus’s strong position in the narrowbody segment. The manufacturer has reported robust first-quarter orders, even as deliveries of the A320neo have slowed. While reactions from competitors remain forthcoming, AirAsia’s commitment highlights Airbus’s competitive advantage and the increasing appeal of the A220 for airlines seeking a balance of flexibility and efficiency in their fleets.
