Airlines With the Most Intra-Europe Widebody Flights This December
December is traditionally one of the busiest months for European aviation, as travelers traverse the continent to reunite with family and friends during the holiday season. While the majority of intra-European flights are operated by narrowbody or regional aircraft—favored for their operational flexibility and cost efficiency—certain airlines deploy widebody jets on select routes. These deployments address heightened passenger demand, increased cargo capacity requirements, or specific operational considerations such as fifth-freedom rights.
According to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium, a total of 3,679 intra-European widebody flights are scheduled for December. This article examines the leading carriers in this segment and the strategic factors influencing their deployment of widebody aircraft within Europe.
Turkish Airlines Dominates Intra-European Widebody Operations
Turkish Airlines emerges as the preeminent operator of intra-European widebody flights this December, accounting for over 58.9% of the total market share with 2,168 scheduled flights. The airline utilizes a diverse widebody fleet comprising Airbus A330-300s, A330-200s, Boeing 787-9s, A350-900s, and Boeing 777-300ERs, all primarily operating from its Istanbul (IST) hub.
The Istanbul to Moscow Vnukovo (VKO) route is Turkish Airlines’ busiest widebody corridor, serviced predominantly by the A330 with an average of nearly four flights daily. The A330 also operates twice daily flights to Amsterdam (AMS), while the Boeing 777-300ER is regularly deployed on the domestic Istanbul–Izmir (ADB) route. Turkish Airlines emphasizes the A330-300’s advanced eco-friendly technologies, fuel efficiency, and enhanced passenger comfort as key factors supporting its use on these high-capacity routes.
Air Europa Maintains a Significant Presence
Spain’s Air Europa ranks second in intra-European widebody operations, with 306 flights scheduled in December, representing an 8.3% share of the market. The airline exclusively operates Boeing 787 Dreamliners, including 11 787-8s and 18 787-9s. The 787-8 variant offers seating for 296 passengers, while the larger 787-9 accommodates up to 339.
Air Europa’s busiest intra-European widebody route is the domestic Madrid (MAD) to Barcelona (BCN) sector, served twice daily by Dreamliner aircraft. The airline also operates daily 787 flights from Madrid to Amsterdam and Istanbul, as well as to Spanish island destinations such as Gran Canaria and Tenerife.
Market Dynamics and Strategic Responses
The increase in intra-European widebody flights occurs against a backdrop of broader industry challenges. Airlines are contending with softness in yields and load factors on transatlantic routes, as highlighted by British Airways’ recent third-quarter earnings report. In response, carriers like Wizz Air have scaled back commitments to Airbus A321XLR aircraft and postponed deliveries, reflecting a cautious stance on capacity expansion.
Market volatility is further illustrated by the decline in International Airlines Group’s (IAG) share price and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration’s plans to reduce air traffic volumes in key markets, which may influence airline scheduling and fleet deployment decisions. Additionally, rising airport charges—such as the recent increases at Amsterdam Schiphol—have prompted carriers including Air France-KLM to reevaluate their operational strategies.
Navigating a Complex Landscape
As airlines adapt to fluctuating demand, regulatory shifts, and escalating costs, the deployment of widebody aircraft on intra-European routes represents both an opportunity and a strategic adjustment. Turkish Airlines and Air Europa, in particular, are leveraging their widebody fleets to meet seasonal demand surges and enhance network efficiency, even as the broader market environment remains uncertain.
