Avtur Mahal and AirAsia Delay Payments to Suppliers and Aircraft Lessors
Financial Strain Amid Rising Jet Fuel Prices
JAKARTA – AirAsia is confronting renewed financial pressures as escalating jet fuel prices, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in Iran, challenge the airline’s capacity to fulfill its financial commitments. The low-cost carrier has reportedly postponed payments to several suppliers and sought extensions on lease payments for multiple aircraft, according to reports from The Straits Times and Bloomberg.
AirAsia X, the group’s long-haul division, is said to have requested a suspension of payments related to at least a dozen aircraft. Rolls-Royce Holdings, responsible for engine maintenance on approximately 10% of AirAsia’s 250-aircraft fleet, has notified the airline of overdue payments under its TotalCare maintenance agreement. Furthermore, AirAsia has approached several aircraft leasing companies to defer rental payments for more than 16 aircraft.
Group CEO Bo Lingam acknowledged that some lessors have shown understanding by granting additional time for payments. Nevertheless, these delays underscore the mounting challenges faced by budget airlines, which have limited scope to increase ticket prices without alienating their highly price-sensitive customer base.
Fleet Leasing and Financial Management
Approximately 98% of AirAsia’s fleet is leased, a strategy common among low-cost carriers to avoid the substantial upfront costs associated with purchasing aircraft, according to aviation consultancy Cirium. While founder Tony Fernandes confirmed ongoing disputes with Rolls-Royce over engine maintenance payments, he sought to downplay concerns regarding lease payment delays, asserting that the company is not experiencing a financial crisis. Fernandes highlighted that AirAsia recently secured $230 million in funding from Deutsche Bank through a private credit arrangement, providing a financial buffer.
Despite these reassurances, the delayed payments carry inherent risks. Strained relationships with suppliers and lessors could result in financial penalties or reputational harm. Industry observers caution that such developments may erode investor and customer confidence, while competitors might capitalize on AirAsia’s difficulties to attract its clientele or negotiate more advantageous terms with suppliers.
Industry Context and Outlook
Recent industry developments illustrate the importance of proactive creditor engagement. For instance, AirAsia Philippines reportedly resolved its outstanding debts following a warning, demonstrating that timely settlements can help restore confidence.
AirAsia’s financial challenges are further highlighted by its recent performance. In May, the airline recorded its largest quarterly loss in three years, and Bloomberg Intelligence data indicates that its debt levels remain elevated relative to earnings and capital. Nonetheless, Fernandes remains optimistic, announcing a multi-billion-dollar agreement to acquire 150 Airbus A220 aircraft as part of the company’s expansion strategy.
“We can’t control what happens in the Middle East, but we have to think that this situation will not last two years,” Fernandes stated, emphasizing the company’s resilience and capacity to identify opportunities amid crisis. Operationally, AirAsia’s earnings before certain costs reportedly cover interest expenses up to five times, outperforming the average airline in the Bloomberg Intelligence index.
As jet fuel prices continue to fluctuate, AirAsia’s ability to manage fixed costs and maintain strong supplier relationships will be crucial to its ongoing recovery and growth.
