BBN Airlines Thailand Launches ACMI Service with Vietjet

BBN Airlines Thailand Launches ACMI Service with Vietjet Amid Intensifying Market Competition
BBN Airlines Thailand, the nation’s first dedicated ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) operator, has officially commenced commercial operations through a strategic partnership with Vietjet Thailand. Beginning December 1, 2025, the agreement involves BBN Airlines supplying an Airbus A320 aircraft to support Vietjet’s domestic routes connecting Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) with Chiang Mai and Phuket. This collaboration marks a significant development for BBN Airlines Thailand as it transitions from its initial phase as Thai SmartLynx to a fully operational ACMI service provider.
Operational Framework and Strategic Partnership
Following the receipt of its Air Operator Certificate in October 2025, BBN Airlines Thailand now offers a 180-seat economy-configured Airbus A320, complete with experienced flight and cabin crew, maintenance, and insurance under the ACMI model. This arrangement allows Vietjet Thailand to concentrate on network management and enhancing customer experience, while benefiting from increased operational flexibility and capacity. Martynas Grigas, Chairman of BBN Airlines Thailand, emphasized the importance of the partnership, stating, “This partnership represents a key milestone for BBN Airlines Thailand as we roll out flexible capacity solutions to Thailand and the region.” He further expressed confidence that the collaboration would meet Vietjet’s operational requirements, particularly during the peak holiday travel season.
To maintain service quality, onboard operations for these wet-leased flights will be jointly managed. A Vietjet Thailand cabin representative will be present on each flight to ensure adherence to the airline’s service standards and to coordinate closely with BBN Airlines Thailand’s crew.
Market Context and Challenges Ahead
The launch of this ACMI service coincides with a robust recovery in Thailand’s aviation and tourism sectors. According to Airports of Thailand (AOT), over 68 million passengers passed through its six main airports in the first half of fiscal 2025, reflecting a 12% year-on-year increase. Domestic travel accounted for more than 26 million passengers, while international arrivals exceeded 16.7 million during the same period, as reported by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). This resurgence, supported by a 7% increase in inbound seat capacity, signals a return to pre-pandemic activity levels.
Despite these positive indicators, BBN Airlines Thailand faces considerable challenges as it enters the competitive ACMI market. The company must navigate complex regulatory requirements across Thailand and Vietnam, integrate operations effectively between the two carriers, and contend with established regional competitors. The partnership is expected to attract close scrutiny from aviation analysts and may provoke strategic responses from rivals aiming to safeguard their market positions.
Simultaneously, Vietjet is pursuing an aggressive expansion strategy, introducing new routes and placing substantial aircraft orders. These developments could influence BBN Airlines Thailand’s strategic direction and operational planning. Both airlines intend to leverage their ACMI partnership to provide reliable domestic services and contribute to Thailand’s emergence as a key aviation and tourism hub.
As a partner of Avia Solutions Group—the world’s largest ACMI provider—BBN Airlines Thailand is well-positioned to offer flexible capacity solutions amid rising travel demand and evolving market dynamics.
