Chapman Freeborn Transports Specialized Auto Cargo from China

Chapman Freeborn Executes Specialized Automotive Cargo Shipments from China
Global air charter specialist Chapman Freeborn, a division of Avia Solutions Group—the world’s largest ACMI provider—has successfully completed a series of urgent shipments transporting specialized automotive materials from China to Europe. This operation underscores the company’s adaptability and expertise within a rapidly evolving logistics landscape.
Complex Logistics and Regulatory Challenges
The project represents a collaborative effort between Chapman Freeborn’s teams in China and Poland, focusing on the transportation of critical automotive parts essential to vehicle performance. To date, the company has executed 26 shipments, moving over 60 tonnes of cargo across 95 pallets. These deliveries have utilized a combination of Boeing 747 freighters and passenger aircraft belly capacity, initially departing from Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport (TAO) to Poland, before expanding to include Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK).
Transporting these specialized materials involves navigating significant challenges. Joyce Di, Cargo Manager China at Chapman Freeborn, emphasized the complexity of the operation, noting the dual-use nature of the cargo subjects it to stringent export controls imposed by Chinese authorities. The shipments require export licenses, as well as MPI and MSDS documentation, demanding a thorough understanding of compliance procedures and customs regulations. Chapman Freeborn’s established local network and technical expertise have been instrumental in ensuring smooth customs clearance throughout the process.
Overcoming Operational Hurdles and Expanding Routes
The initial shipment proved particularly demanding as it coincided with China’s three-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday, a period during which customs and logistics services operate at reduced capacity. Despite these constraints, Chapman Freeborn’s team worked extended hours to coordinate resources and secure immediate departure options from Qingdao. Their rapid response enabled the completion of booking, pickup, and export procedures during the holiday, successfully meeting the client’s urgent delivery requirements.
Following this initial success, Chapman Freeborn established an ongoing partnership with the client, managing regular shipments. As the project advanced, the team adapted to capacity limitations and rising costs at Qingdao by exploring alternative export routes. After a successful test shipment, subsequent consignments with less stringent time constraints were routed through Yantai port and Beijing Capital International Airport. This strategic adjustment provided more cost-effective solutions while maintaining compliance and delivery speed.
Navigating Industry-Wide Challenges
These operational achievements occur against a backdrop of broader industry challenges, including ongoing trade tensions, supply chain disruptions, and fluctuating market demands. Chapman Freeborn, like many logistics providers, must continuously balance competitive pricing with high service quality. The company’s ability to adapt is critical as competitors adjust fleet management and pricing strategies to maintain market share. Industry data reveals that firms such as Hertz are actively managing their fleets to mitigate the impact of trade-related uncertainties, highlighting the sector’s need for flexibility.
With over five decades of experience and a comprehensive global network, Chapman Freeborn continues to demonstrate resilience and agility, positioning itself to meet client needs amid a complex and competitive market environment.
