Coulson Aviation Advances Wildfire Response Through Partnership with EmberWorks
THERMAL, Calif., September 10, 2026 — Coulson Aviation has announced a strategic partnership with EmberWorks, its dedicated innovation division, marking a significant advancement in wildfire response technology. This collaboration is designed to convert real-world operational challenges into enhanced capabilities for aerial firefighting, aviation, and emergency response.
Integrating Innovation with Operational Expertise
EmberWorks, formally introduced at the Aerial Fire Fighting Global Conference in Rome earlier this year, embodies Coulson’s longstanding commitment to innovation. Historically, Coulson has addressed operational needs by modifying aircraft and developing mission systems, exemplified by programs involving the C-130 airtanker, Boeing 737 Fireliner, and CH-47 Chinook helicopter. EmberWorks now provides a structured platform that accelerates this process by integrating development and testing directly within Coulson’s active global firefighting operations.
Unlike many industry initiatives where specialized technologies such as fire retardants, airborne sensing, and mission systems are developed independently, EmberWorks unites these disciplines. The division benefits from direct access to operational personnel, aircraft, and infrastructure, enabling rapid development, integration, and evaluation of new tools in real-world environments. This approach ensures that innovations are practical and immediately applicable to frontline firefighting efforts.
Stu Sprung, Vice President of EmberWorks, emphasized the division’s operational focus, stating, “The fire service does not need technology for technology’s sake. It needs information and tools that fit the way people actually operate on an incident. We can start with an operational problem, work directly with the people experiencing it, develop a solution, and evaluate it in the environment where it ultimately needs to perform. That feedback loop is fundamental to EmberWorks.”
Focus on Airborne Intelligence and Operational Challenges
Currently, EmberWorks is concentrating on airborne intelligence through the development of ORBIT, a sensing and mission technology designed to transform operational aircraft into active contributors to incident intelligence. Initial ORBIT systems have been installed on two tactical aerial supervision aircraft, enhancing situational awareness and decision-making capabilities. Plans are underway to extend these applications to Coulson’s C-130 and 737 airtankers, as well as helicopter platforms.
The partnership, however, faces significant challenges amid a volatile global landscape. Rising fuel costs and prolonged route disruptions, driven by the ongoing Middle East conflict, are placing pressure on operational efficiency and financial sustainability. These factors have intensified market scrutiny of Coulson Aviation’s ability to maintain performance and cost-effectiveness. In response, competitors may adjust their strategies by forming new partnerships or investing in similar technologies to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving wildfire response sector.
Despite these headwinds, Coulson and EmberWorks remain committed to addressing operational challenges rather than adhering to a fixed technology portfolio. This flexible approach allows the division to adapt as agency requirements and operating environments evolve, ensuring that innovation remains closely aligned with the needs of frontline responders.
