Formosa Plastics’ Smart Algae Oil Receives EU Sustainability Certification
Formosa Plastics New Smart, a subsidiary of the Formosa Plastics Group, has announced that its affiliate, Chenghao Technology, has obtained the ISCC EU international sustainability and carbon certification for its algae oil technology. This achievement represents a significant milestone in integrating algae oil into the global sustainable fuel supply chain and advances the qualification of renewable feedstocks for the European sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) market.
Advancing Taiwan’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel Ambitions
Taiwan’s government has set an ambitious target of achieving 5% SAF usage for domestic airlines by 2030. In response, Formosa Plastics New Smart is actively developing locally sourced feedstocks through microalgae technology to enhance the stability and self-reliance of Taiwan’s aviation green energy sector. Wang Jui-yu, Chairwoman of Formosa Plastics New Smart and Formosa Plastics Biomedical, underscored the importance of diversified feedstock strategies to meet the growing demand for SAF. While Formosa Plastics Biomedical focuses on recycling waste cooking oil into SAF feedstock, Formosa Plastics New Smart is pioneering bio-based feedstocks derived from microalgae. Wang emphasized that these complementary approaches—combining resource recycling with innovative bio-based technologies—are essential for establishing a resilient and self-sufficient SAF feedstock supply system in Taiwan.
Certification and Technical Innovations
The ISCC EU certification, recognized by the European Union, encompasses the entire production process from microalgae cultivation to algae oil extraction. It also verifies greenhouse gas emissions calculations and management protocols, ensuring that the algae oil development adheres to stringent international sustainability standards.
From a technical standpoint, Liu Hui-chi, General Manager of Formosa Plastics New Smart, highlighted that the viability of microalgae-based SAF depends on oil production efficiency, process stability, and scalability. Chenghao Technology has developed high-efficiency oil-producing algae strains alongside heterotrophic fermentation mass production techniques. Employing proprietary cultivation methods and industrial-grade modular designs, the company has achieved algae biomass oil content ranging from 50% to 60%. Its 500-liter pilot production line has successfully completed critical mass production and stability assessments, with the algae oil meeting downstream refining specifications, thereby demonstrating readiness for practical SAF refining applications.
Challenges and Future Prospects
Despite these advancements, Formosa Plastics faces challenges in scaling up microalgae technology and maintaining consistent supply chain management to comply with rigorous international standards. As the SAF market expands, investor interest in sustainable aviation fuel options is expected to intensify, potentially heightening competition. Industry rivals may accelerate their own renewable fuel technology development to maintain competitiveness in this evolving sector.
Looking forward, Formosa Plastics New Smart plans to focus on scaling up production processes, improving efficiency, and optimizing costs as it transitions from pilot to commercial-scale validation. These efforts position the company at the forefront of Taiwan’s sustainable aviation fuel initiatives, while navigating the complexities of global supply chains and a rapidly changing competitive landscape.
