Helicopter Deliveries and Billings Rise in First Half of 2026, GAMA Reports
The General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) has announced a strong start to 2026 for the helicopter industry, with both deliveries and billings showing notable increases despite emerging challenges. According to GAMA’s second-quarter report, 419 helicopters valued at $2.28 billion were delivered during the first half of the year. This represents a 7.2% increase in billings and a 4.0% rise in unit deliveries compared to the same period in 2025, highlighting a continuing trend toward larger and higher-priced aircraft.
Market Dynamics and Segment Performance
While overall deliveries have increased, industry executives have expressed concerns over growing inventory pressures and a 6% decline in segment profit. The piston helicopter segment experienced modest growth, with Robinson Helicopter Company maintaining its market leadership by delivering 97 piston helicopters. Notably, the R22 Beta model saw a resurgence with 19 units shipped. Guimbal followed with 13 Cabri G2 helicopters, and Enstrom is preparing to re-enter the market pending imminent FAA certification of its updated 280FX model, which could enable deliveries before the end of the year.
Turbine Sector and Competitive Landscape
In the turbine helicopter sector, Airbus continues to dominate single-engine deliveries, producing 47 H125s and 19 H130s across its French and U.S. facilities. The light twin (Part 27) market has seen a narrowing gap between Bell and Airbus, with Bell delivering seven 429s and Airbus 15 H135s. This shift may reflect early impacts from the new H135 ‘140 effect’ on market dynamics. Production of the H145, positioned at the lower end of the Part 29 class, increased to 52 units from 36 in the first half of 2025, as Airbus’s Donauwörth facility works to ramp up output amid a growing backlog.
In the large medium twin segment, Leonardo’s AW139 sustained its longstanding dominance with 34 units delivered worldwide. Leonardo also strengthened its position in the super medium market by delivering 15 helicopters, while Airbus added only two H175s to the fleet during the same period.
Heavy Segment and Industry Responses
Within the heavy helicopter category, Airbus delivered a single H225, maintaining its lead as Sikorsky’s S-92A+ remains in production but has yet to be delivered. Sikorsky, however, made a significant impact with 31 UH-60/S-70 helicopters delivered in the first half of the year, many of which were S-70i variants sold directly to civil customers. The company is actively upgrading its Black Hawk line to meet evolving market demands.
Broader Market Trends
Despite the challenges posed by inventory buildup and pressure on profit margins, the overall market response remains positive. Deliveries of business jets, turboprops, and rotorcraft have all increased, with Bell Helicopter reporting growth in both deliveries and revenues during the second quarter. As manufacturers continue to adapt to shifting demand and intensifying competition, the helicopter industry appears positioned for sustained growth, while maintaining a vigilant focus on profitability and inventory management in the coming months.
