India Targets 50% Share of Global Aviation MRO Market by 2030

India Aims for Half of Global Aviation MRO Market by 2030
Ambitious Growth Plans for the Indian MRO Sector
Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu has called on the Indian aviation industry to significantly increase Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) activities domestically, with the goal of reducing dependence on foreign facilities. Addressing the ‘Aviation Horizon 2025’ conference in New Delhi, Naidu outlined a bold vision for India to capture 50% of the global MRO market by 2030, a substantial rise from the current 14% share recorded in the fiscal year 2024.
India’s MRO sector, currently valued at around USD 1.8 billion, is positioned for rapid growth as the country emerges as one of the fastest expanding civil aviation markets worldwide. The minister highlighted projections indicating that air passenger traffic will reach 300 million by 2030. This growth is supported by plans to develop 50 new airports over the next five years and an additional 200 airports within the next two decades. Such expansion is expected to double the size of the MRO market, driven by increasing airline fleets and recent reductions in Goods and Services Tax (GST) on MRO services.
Challenges and Strategic Focus
Despite the promising outlook, Naidu acknowledged the challenges India faces in developing high-value maintenance capabilities and competing with established global players. He emphasized the necessity for the Indian MRO industry to transition beyond labor-intensive operations and focus on generating intellectual property and fostering innovation. “We must develop our own capabilities and technologies, not just provide manpower,” he stated, highlighting the importance of a comprehensive approach to sectoral growth.
The minister also underscored the urgent need for a skilled workforce to support the expanding aviation and MRO sectors. He advocated for enhanced collaboration between educational institutions and industry to nurture a new generation of engineers and technicians proficient in advanced aviation technologies. Such initiatives are deemed critical for India to consolidate its position in the global MRO market while creating substantial employment opportunities across the country.
Positioning India as a Global MRO Hub
As India accelerates its ambitions in the MRO domain, international competitors are simultaneously advancing through innovation and capacity expansion, intensifying the competition for market share. Naidu urged all stakeholders to collaborate and capitalize on India’s strengths to establish the country as a global hub for aviation maintenance and engineering.
