Inside Unical’s Strategy to Keep the Global Fleet Flying
Unical Aviation is currently navigating a significant transformation following its 2024 acquisition of ecube Solutions, a prominent provider of aircraft storage, disassembly, and transition services. This strategic acquisition aligns with Unical’s broader vision to reinforce its standing as a leading global supplier of aircraft parts and components, with a particular emphasis on the Used Serviceable Material (USM) market.
Expanding Capabilities Under Experienced Leadership
At the forefront of this integration is CEO Sharon Green, a seasoned aviation professional with 35 years of industry experience. Since joining Unical in 2022, after holding senior positions at The Memphis Group and GECAS Materials, Green has overseen the company’s expansion across the United States and Europe. Today, Unical supplies USM to partners in over 90 countries and manages an extensive inventory comprising 90 million parts across more than one million unique part numbers.
The acquisition of ecube Solutions significantly broadens Unical’s service portfolio by incorporating aircraft storage and disassembly capabilities. This expansion enables the company to address emerging challenges within the aviation sector. For instance, as the U.S. Air Force grapples with delays and funding uncertainties related to extending the service life of its C-5M and C-17A fleets, Unical’s enhanced offerings provide commercial operators with a dependable alternative to sustain operational readiness.
Pioneering New Frontiers in Aircraft Disassembly
A defining milestone for Unical and ecube occurred earlier this year with the acquisition and subsequent disassembly of a fleet of Airbus A320neo airframes—the first such operation globally. Traditionally, aircraft as new as the A320neo have been considered unsuitable for disassembly. However, ongoing industry pressures, including persistent engine availability issues, have compelled aircraft owners to reconsider fleet management strategies. Green acknowledged that while the decision to disassemble the A320neos involved calculated risk, the demand for newer, high-quality parts remains robust. “Through the years, you learn that the first to come out is going to be successful. We just had no idea how successful the Neos would be,” she remarked.
This project also served as a valuable learning experience for Unical, leveraging ecube’s expertise to optimize the disassembly process and better serve global operators. Green anticipates that the availability of A320neos for disassembly will increase over the next decade, further cementing Unical’s influence within the evolving USM market.
Navigating a Competitive and Dynamic Market
Unical’s strategic developments unfold amid intensifying competition within the aviation industry. Companies such as Flexjet and Bond To are expanding their fleets through substantial Bombardier orders, while others, including ZIM Integrated Shipping Services, are modernizing their assets to better navigate volatile market conditions. These trends highlight the critical importance of fleet modernization and operational efficiency—areas where Unical seeks to maintain a distinct competitive advantage.
As the aviation sector continues to adapt to shifting market dynamics and operational challenges, Unical’s integration of ecube and its commitment to innovative fleet solutions position the company to sustain the global fleet’s operational viability, regardless of the turbulence ahead.
