ITA Airways Plans to Expand Wide-Body Fleet to 30 Aircraft by 2030
ITA Airways has announced an ambitious plan to increase its wide-body fleet from 23 to 30 aircraft by 2030, aiming to bolster Italy’s presence in the global aviation market. The announcement was made at the Routes Europe 2026 summit in Rimini, highlighting the airline’s strategic focus on expanding its network, which currently serves 75 destinations, and deepening its partnership with Lufthansa.
Strategic Expansion of Fleet and Network
Maria Angela Aguzzi, ITA Airways’ Head of Fleet Network and Alliances, detailed the airline’s roadmap centered on long-haul growth to enhance the competitiveness of Rome and Milan as international hubs. The expansion strategy includes strengthening domestic connections, increasing seasonal European routes, and significantly boosting intercontinental capacity. A key element of this growth is the collaboration with Lufthansa, which aims to optimize network reach and improve passenger experience through more seamless codeshare options. Passengers are advised to verify the operating carrier when booking to ensure clarity on airline policies.
Route Developments and Capacity Enhancements
ITA Airways’ expansion plan focuses on three main areas. The intercontinental segment will see new routes such as Rome to Boston, launching on May 2, 2026, connecting Italy directly to a major U.S. hub important for education and business travel. Additionally, a Rome to Santo Domingo route is scheduled for winter 2026, targeting leisure travelers seeking counter-seasonal destinations. The airline will continue to emphasize existing long-haul leisure routes to high-demand winter destinations like Malé and Mauritius.
For the summer 2026 season, ITA Airways plans to increase capacity to Italian islands including Pantelleria, Lampedusa, and Trapani to meet peak leisure demand. Services to Mediterranean hubs such as Málaga, Marseille, Valencia, and Alicante will also be expanded, alongside additional flights to popular Greek and Spanish island destinations.
The fleet scaling target is set to grow the current wide-body fleet of 23 aircraft to 30 by 2030, supporting the airline’s broader network and capacity goals.
Market Challenges and Competitive Dynamics
ITA Airways’ fleet expansion occurs amid rapid technological advancements in the aviation industry. Emerging aircraft models, such as JetZero’s blended-wing Z4, promise greater efficiency and lower operating costs, potentially disrupting traditional fleet strategies. This innovation is expected to intensify competition, compelling ITA Airways to maintain competitive pricing and high service standards.
Competitors are likely to respond with their own fleet upgrades and technological innovations, potentially escalating the competition for market share. ITA Airways will also face operational challenges, including integrating new aircraft into its existing operations and ensuring comprehensive training for crew members to manage the expanded fleet effectively.
Passenger Rights and Booking Considerations
The expansion and enhanced partnership with Lufthansa introduce important considerations for passengers. Under EU Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, travelers are entitled to compensation ranging from €250 to €600 for cancellations or delays exceeding three hours, depending on the flight distance. In cases of significant disruption, ITA Airways is obligated to provide meals, refreshments, and hotel accommodation when necessary.
Given the deeper codeshare cooperation with Lufthansa, passengers should carefully verify the operating carrier for their flights to understand which airline’s policies and protections apply. This clarity is essential to ensure passengers are fully informed about their rights and the services available to them.
As ITA Airways advances toward its 2030 vision, its ability to navigate industry innovations and competitive pressures will be pivotal in shaping Italy’s role in the global aviation landscape.
