Mubadala's Strata in Talks to Manufacture Global Jet Engine Parts

Mubadala’s Strata Advances Plans to Manufacture Global Jet Engine Components
Strata, the aerospace manufacturing subsidiary of Mubadala Investment Company, is progressing towards producing aircraft engine parts for the first time, seeking to capitalize on the current global shortage of jet engines and related components. Speaking at the Dubai Airshow, acting chief executive Sara Al Memari disclosed that the Al Ain-based firm anticipates finalizing a deal and commencing production early next year.
“This is something really exciting and is one of the hot cakes within the market,” Al Memari stated. “We are actively looking into it and hopefully we will be closing something. We're pushing to Q1.” She refrained from naming the potential partner involved in the ongoing negotiations.
Navigating a Challenging Aviation Supply Chain Environment
The aviation sector is grappling with a severe supply chain crisis, intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical tensions, and labor shortages. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reports that aircraft deliveries are projected to fall to 1,254 units in 2024, approximately 30% below pre-pandemic figures, while the backlog of undelivered jets has surged to a record 17,000. IATA estimates that these supply chain disruptions will cost airlines over $11 billion this year, driven by delayed fuel efficiency gains, increased maintenance expenses, and higher costs associated with engine leasing and spare parts. Engine-related issues alone have grounded hundreds of aircraft, compelling airlines to operate older, less efficient models and thereby reducing overall capacity.
Strata’s planned entry into the jet engine parts market positions it in direct competition with established industry leaders such as GE Aerospace and Boeing, both of which have benefited from rising stock valuations amid the jet engine demand surge and significant contract awards. The competitive landscape is further complicated by recent developments, including Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd’s collaboration with Russia to manufacture SJ-100 jets, which has attracted considerable investor interest. Meanwhile, Boeing faces potential challenges, including a possible $4 billion charge linked to delays in its 777X program, which could affect market sentiment.
Expanding Role in Boeing’s 777X Programme and Broader Market Ambitions
Beyond engine parts, Strata is deepening its involvement in Boeing’s 777X programme. Al Memari confirmed that the company will supply carbon-fibre materials, although the exact aircraft components remain under negotiation. Strata’s advanced Al Ain facility is equipped to produce carbon-fibre prepreg materials—composites of fibre and resin cured under heat and pressure—intended for the 777X’s primary structural elements. The Strata Syensqo Advanced Material (SSAM) facility, a joint venture with Belgian firm Syensqo, is currently undergoing qualification and is expected to commence manufacturing by the end of the first quarter of 2026.
While Al Memari did not disclose the facility’s annual production capacity, she noted that SSAM’s output for 777X components is “fully sold out for the next 10 years.” The financial terms of the contract with Boeing remain confidential.
In addition to its work on wide-body aircraft, Strata is actively pursuing contracts for single-aisle aircraft, engaging with multiple original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) as it seeks to broaden its market footprint. These ambitions unfold amid a wave of strategic initiatives by competitors, including Vietnam Airlines’ recent order for 50 Boeing jets and Tanzania’s $420 million synthetic fuel project, which aims to disrupt the established jet fuel market in Africa.
As Strata prepares to enter the global jet engine parts sector, it confronts both significant opportunities and intense competition within a market shaped by persistent supply constraints and shifting industry dynamics.
