New Funding Supports Aviation Program

New Funding Boosts TCC Aviation Program Amid Industry Growth and Challenges
Strengthening Workforce Development Through Strategic Investment
As Fort Worth’s aviation sector experiences significant expansion, the demand for skilled aviation mechanics and technicians continues to rise, placing Tarrant County College’s (TCC) aviation program at the forefront of workforce development. Michael Esquivel, dean of business and industry at TCC’s Northwest Campus, emphasized the program’s longstanding reputation, stating, “We want to be the No. 1 provider. We’ve got a strong reputation of over 40 years. I think we do it the best.”
Recently, TCC’s aviation maintenance technology program secured critical financial support, receiving $25,000 in scholarship funds from the Embraer Foundation alongside a $250,000 grant from the GE Aerospace Foundation. These funds are primarily allocated to cover student testing fees, which typically amount to $1,500 per individual. The Embraer Foundation’s contribution will fund 15 student tests, while the GE grant will support an additional 50. Esquivel highlighted the importance of this assistance, noting that it allows students to advance through the program without interruption. “A lot of them, if they don’t have the money, tend to go to work,” he explained. “They might not be working with an aircraft, airframe or pilot licensure, and then some don’t come back for many years later.”
Esquivel also shared a recent example of the program’s success, recounting how a former student, now employed by Embraer and promoted to team lead, was actively recruiting new talent at a campus job fair. “Now he’s helping hire the next generation, not too many years apart from him,” Esquivel said, underscoring the value of strong industry partnerships in fostering career pathways for graduates.
Industry Partnerships and Future Prospects
The impact of the new funding extends beyond immediate financial relief. NW Campus President Zarina Blankenbaker described the $25,000 gift from Embraer as “more than a financial contribution — it is an investment in human potential and in an industry that connects the world.” Chancellor Elva LeBlanc echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the college’s dedication to workforce readiness and innovation in aviation education. “This partnership with Embraer and the Embraer Foundation reflects a shared commitment to workforce readiness and innovation in aviation education. We’re proud to support Embraer’s growth and strengthen the region’s aviation workforce,” she stated.
TCC’s program benefits from its location at the Erma C. Johnson Hadley Northwest Center of Excellence for Aviation, which provides students with direct exposure to industry leaders. Embraer’s planned maintenance, repair, and overhaul facility at Alliance Airport, scheduled to open by late 2026 and expected to employ 500 mechanics, presents significant recruitment opportunities for TCC students.
Navigating Challenges Amid Industry Evolution
Despite the influx of funding and growing opportunities, aviation education programs face several challenges. Institutions must secure sustainable long-term financial support while integrating advanced technologies into existing infrastructures. Additionally, they must navigate complex regulatory environments. The competitive landscape is intensifying as companies accelerate research and development, forge strategic partnerships, and prioritize decarbonization and advanced air mobility initiatives. These trends have attracted increased investor interest and government backing, as organizations compete for leadership in emerging aviation technologies.
Nevertheless, Esquivel remains optimistic about the program’s accessibility and potential. “Any student can start their journey with no aviation knowledge,” he affirmed, highlighting the program’s role in shaping the future aviation workforce amid a rapidly evolving industry.
