PM Modi Inaugurates Safran MRO Facility in Hyderabad, Calls for Aircraft Engine Design in India

PM Modi Inaugurates Safran’s Largest MRO Facility in Hyderabad, Advocates for Indigenous Aircraft Engine Design
Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated Safran’s largest global maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility for LEAP engines in Hyderabad on Wednesday, marking a pivotal development in India’s aerospace sector. Speaking at the event via video conference, Modi urged Safran to explore opportunities for designing aircraft engines and components within India, underscoring the government’s strong commitment to fostering a ‘Design in India’ ethos across various industries.
A Strategic Investment in India’s Aerospace Capabilities
The newly established 45,000-square-meter facility, located at the GMR Aerospace and Industrial Park, represents an initial investment of ₹1,300 crore and positions India as a potential global hub for MRO services. Modi emphasized the critical role of India’s extensive network of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and its young, skilled workforce in supporting such advanced technological initiatives.
Highlighting India’s ambitious reforms, the Prime Minister stated, “India is dreaming big, doing bigger, and delivering the best.” He pointed to the liberalization of foreign direct investment (FDI) policies, including 100% FDI through automatic routes in most sectors and up to 74% in defence, alongside significant reforms in the space sector. Modi also referenced the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes, the reduction of over 40,000 company compliances in the past 11 years, and the implementation of the National Single Window System for business approvals as key drivers of India’s reform-oriented environment.
These measures, Modi asserted, have enhanced India’s reputation as a trusted partner and emerging manufacturing hub. He described investing in India as “the smartest business decision of this decade,” citing the country’s rapid economic growth, stable governance, and expansive domestic market. Modi further emphasized that investors are regarded as co-creators in India’s development journey.
Expanding India’s Aerospace Footprint Amid Global Competition
The inauguration of the Safran MRO facility coincides with intensifying competition in the global aerospace market. The collaboration between Tata Advanced Systems and Safran to establish a LEAP engine manufacturing unit in Hyderabad further highlights India’s expanding aerospace capabilities. Nevertheless, established global players such as Boeing and Airbus, along with partnerships like Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s (HAL) joint venture with Russia to produce SJ-100 jets, present formidable competitive challenges. Market responses to these developments are expected to be mixed, balancing optimism about increased aerospace investment in India with concerns over competing against entrenched international firms.
Modi noted that India’s domestic aviation market has become the third largest worldwide, with growing demand for air travel and expanding airline fleets driving the need for sophisticated MRO infrastructure. The new Safran facility is anticipated to generate high-technology employment opportunities for Indian youth and further consolidate the country’s standing in the global aerospace industry.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, Union Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu, and senior Safran executives, reflecting a collaborative effort to advance India’s aerospace ambitions.
