RTX Selects AeroTEC to Advance Hybrid-Electric Flight Demonstrator
RTX has once again refrained from announcing a definitive first flight date for its hybrid-electric De Havilland Canada Dash 8-100 demonstrator, a project partially funded by the Canadian government. Originally, the modified twin-turboprop was expected to take to the skies approximately three years after the Hybrid-Electric Flight Demonstrator project was launched in 2021. Although delays continue to affect the timeline, recent developments indicate meaningful progress. The integrated propulsion system has now undergone full-power testing, and AeroTEC, based in Moses Lake, Washington, has been appointed to lead aircraft integration and support the forthcoming flight-testing phase.
Hybrid-Electric Powertrain and Testing Milestones
The demonstrator replaces one of the Dash 8-100’s standard PW120 turboprop engines with a novel hybrid-electric powertrain. This system integrates a newly developed thermal engine from Pratt & Whitney Canada, a 1MW electric motor supplied by Collins Aerospace, and 200kWh batteries provided by H55. Dr. Michael Winter, RTX’s chief scientist, reported that the powertrain recently surpassed the 1,800 shaft horsepower (shp) threshold required for takeoff during testing. This milestone also marked the first battery-powered operation of the propulsion system, including a complete charge and discharge cycle, underscoring the system’s operational readiness.
RTX anticipates that the hybrid-electric configuration could reduce fuel consumption by up to 30 percent by optimizing the use of the gas turbine across various flight phases. The partnership with AeroTEC, a company with extensive experience in hybrid-electric aircraft conversions, is expected to expedite the integration of the new powertrain. While Winter declined to provide a specific timeline, he emphasized a cautious approach: “We are going to fly it when we are ready. We are not doing it for press releases, we are doing it to plan.”
AeroTEC president Justin Morigeau confirmed that his company will oversee all design integration efforts and manage the safety of flight certification process. Although the aircraft remains stationed in Mirabel, Canada, integration work has already commenced.
Challenges and Industry Context
Despite the technical advancements, the project faces significant challenges. The integration of hybrid-electric components with existing aircraft systems presents complex engineering obstacles. Additionally, regulatory approval for certifying this new propulsion technology remains uncertain, posing potential delays. Economic viability is another critical concern, as airlines and operators carefully evaluate the cost-benefit balance of adopting hybrid-electric propulsion. Market responses have included skepticism regarding the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of the technology, while competitors may accelerate their own hybrid-electric engine development programs in reaction to RTX’s efforts.
In a related development, Pratt & Whitney Canada continues its collaboration with long-term airframe partner ATR to explore hybrid-electric engines for a future regional turboprop, the Evo. Dr. Winter noted that multiple test activities are planned, although progress will likely depend on the availability of funding.
As the aviation industry increasingly prioritizes sustainability, RTX’s hybrid-electric demonstrator stands as both a technical milestone and a measure of market readiness for next-generation propulsion systems.
