Sandra Acree Prepares for New Opportunities
Sandra Acree’s transition from the U.S. Marine Corps to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Aviation Maintenance Science (AMS) program exemplifies a unique and determined career trajectory. Now a senior at Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach Campus, Acree is applying the discipline she cultivated in the military alongside her passion for aviation to establish a promising future within a rapidly evolving industry.
From Military Service to Aviation Maintenance
Acree enlisted in the Marine Corps at the age of 20, seeking structure and purpose beyond her small-town upbringing. Reflecting on her decision, she noted that a Marine Corps recruiter convinced her that joining the Marines was the most honorable and rewarding way to instill discipline in her life. During her service as an aviation ordnance technician for the F-35B fighter jet, Acree developed a profound interest in aviation maintenance, a passion that ultimately shaped her transition to civilian life.
Determined to pursue this new career path with excellence, Acree selected Embry-Riddle for its distinguished reputation and comprehensive resources. “When I commit to something, I want to do it the best way possible,” she explained. At Embry-Riddle, she quickly immersed herself in the AMS program, excelling academically and assuming leadership responsibilities, including the role of AMS team coordinator.
Her practical experience extends to participation in prominent aviation maintenance competitions such as PBExpo 2025, where her team secured second place overall, and the MRO Americas 2025 Aerospace Maintenance Council Competition. Reflecting on the latter, Acree highlighted her favorite event: removing and replacing an A320 emergency slide. “Afterward, I felt like a mechanic, not just a student,” she remarked. Additionally, she contributed to a student panel at MRO Americas, offering insights into industry challenges and the expectations facing young professionals entering the field.
Navigating Industry Challenges and Emerging Technologies
Acree’s career development coincides with significant shifts in both the aviation and agriculture sectors. The U.S. cattle industry, for instance, confronts new threats from the emergence of New World screwworms, which could prompt movement restrictions, quarantines, and trade disruptions—factors that may affect consumer confidence and industry stability. Concurrently, the rise of artificial intelligence in agriculture, characterized by advanced robotics and predictive analytics, presents both opportunities and challenges for maintenance professionals.
In this context, Acree’s adaptability and technical expertise position her to effectively navigate these evolving landscapes. Industries increasingly demand skilled workers capable of responding to emerging threats and integrating new technologies, underscoring the importance of her experience and training.
Mentorship has been instrumental in Acree’s progress, with faculty members such as Ian Wheeler, chair of the AMS Department, providing essential guidance and support throughout her academic journey. As she approaches graduation, Acree remains focused on building a fulfilling career in aviation maintenance while maintaining the agility required to meet the demands of a dynamic and sometimes unpredictable marketplace. Her story highlights the enduring value of resilience and forward-thinking in the pursuit of professional success.
