Shannon Airport set for €50M Ryanair aviation expansion boost

Ryanair to Invest €50 Million in Shannon Airport Expansion
The Shannon Airport Group has announced that Ryanair plans to invest €50 million in a new four-bay aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) hangar, alongside the establishment of an Engineering Academy at Shannon Airport. This significant development is expected to create approximately 400 highly skilled jobs, reinforcing Shannon’s status as a major aviation hub in Europe.
Ryanair has submitted a planning application for the proposed facility, which will be constructed on a 6.7-acre site within the airport’s airfield. Once approved, the new hangar will become Ryanair’s largest aircraft maintenance operation in Ireland, further strengthening Shannon Airport’s position as a leading centre for aerospace activities.
Strategic Importance and Regional Impact
Minister for Transport, Darragh O’Brien, welcomed Ryanair’s investment, highlighting its importance for both the airport and the wider mid-west region. He emphasized that the project aligns with the State’s ambition to develop Shannon Airport as a key aerospace industry cluster. According to Minister O’Brien, the investment will not only generate substantial employment opportunities but also enhance Ireland’s reputation as a global leader in aviation and a premier international aerospace hub.
Ray O’Driscoll, CEO of The Shannon Airport Group, described Ryanair’s commitment as a strong endorsement of Shannon’s aviation ecosystem and the broader regional economy. He noted that Shannon has evolved from the birthplace of aircraft leasing into a global aviation centre encompassing maintenance, engineering, leasing, and related services. The airport and its adjacent business park currently host nearly 100 companies, forming Ireland’s largest aviation cluster.
Shannon Airport’s existing infrastructure includes ten aircraft hangars dedicated to MRO, aircraft painting, and general aviation activities, underscoring the sector’s diversity and strength. Mr. O’Driscoll emphasized that Ryanair’s proposed expansion reflects the deep pool of aviation expertise and engineering talent cultivated in the region over many years.
The announcement was made in the presence of key figures including Neal McMahon, COO of Ryanair; Eddie Wilson, CEO of Ryanair; Peter Burke TD, Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment; Jenny Melia, CEO of Enterprise Ireland; and current Ryanair engineering apprentices, highlighting the collaborative effort behind this major development.
