Limited Airbus Fleet and Regional Context At present, Nigeria operates only two active Airbus aircraft: an A320-200 managed by United Nigeria Airlines and an A330-200 belonging to the Nigerian Air Force. Meanwhile, Ibom Air’s two Airbus A220-300s have been grounded for maintenance since late 2023 and mid-2024, respectively, with a third expected to arrive in July. Until then, Ibom Air’s Airbus fleet remains inactive. This scarcity of Airbus aircraft is not unique to Nigeria but reflects a broader trend across West Africa. Collectively, airlines such as Air Côte d’Ivoire, Air Senegal, United Nigeria Airlines, and the Nigerian Air Force operate fewer than 30 Airbus planes. This limited regional fleet raises serious doubts about the ability of a Nigerian MRO facility to attract sufficient business to sustain operations. Industry Concerns and Financial Implications Olumide Ohunayo, director of research at Zenith Travels, expressed skepticism about the project’s viability, emphasizing the insufficient critical mass of Airbus aircraft in Nigeria and the wider West African sub-region. He highlighted that previous attempts by manufacturers like Boeing to establish similar facilities faltered due to Nigeria’s inadequate infrastructure, particularly unreliable power supply, which is crucial for cost-effective maintenance operations. The financial commitment required for such a facility is substantial. BusinessDay reports that a full-scale commercial Airbus MRO typically demands an investment of at least $500 million. Costs vary depending on the facility’s size and capabilities, ranging from a modest single-bay hangar to a comprehensive aerospace complex equipped for engine overhauls, training, and component repairs. Compounding these challenges is Nigeria’s ongoing jet fuel shortage, which has disrupted airline operations and threatens to undermine the potential success of a maintenance hub. Additionally, competition from regional aviation leaders like Ethiopian Airlines, which is expanding its Airbus fleet, could divert MRO business away from Nigeria. Prospects and Strategic Focus Given these obstacles, some analysts suggest that Airbus may prioritize training, sales, and marketing activities in Nigeria rather than establishing full-scale maintenance operations in the near future. Ohunayo remarked that maintenance facilities are unlikely to materialize within the next decade or more, characterizing the current proposal as largely symbolic in the lead-up to upcoming elections.
