Uganda Airlines Targets Break-Even by 2031 Ahead of New Boeing Deliveries

Uganda Airlines Aims for Profitability by 2031 Amid Fleet Expansion Plans
Uganda Airlines has set a target to achieve its first profit by June 2031, nearly 12 years after its relaunch in 2019. Since its reestablishment, the national carrier has operated at a loss, heavily reliant on government subsidies to maintain and grow its operations. The airline’s management is now implementing comprehensive operational and commercial reforms in preparation for the arrival of eight new Boeing aircraft, which are expected to significantly expand its fleet and route network.
Strategic Reforms and Fleet Expansion
Under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer Girma Wake, who took charge in February, Uganda Airlines is focused on reducing its dependence on state support and moving toward financial sustainability. Wake emphasized that the airline is working toward breaking even by the end of the 2030/31 financial year, ahead of the scheduled delivery of new aircraft. Achieving this goal will require a rigorous cost management strategy implemented across the entire organization.
The airline’s recent order includes four Boeing 737-8 MAXs and four Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, with deliveries planned for 2032 and 2033. This acquisition will more than double Uganda Airlines’ current fleet from seven to fifteen aircraft. In the meantime, the carrier intends to wet lease additional planes to gradually expand its capacity and route offerings, laying the foundation for sustained profitability.
Market Challenges and Financial Outlook
Despite the ambitious expansion plans, Uganda Airlines faces significant challenges in converting increased traffic and network growth into a stable and efficient business model. Market reactions to the airline’s fleet expansion and break-even timeline have been mixed, particularly as regional competitors such as Aerolíneas Argentinas also pursue major fleet renewals. The intensifying competition in the regional aviation market adds complexity, though Uganda Airlines’ revenue growth and new route initiatives have fostered cautious optimism among industry observers.
The airline’s expansion strategy is not without risks. Production delays at Boeing and Airbus could impact delivery schedules, although recent trends suggest a gradual recovery in aircraft manufacturing. Wake highlighted that the airline’s focus remains on enhancing revenue generation, improving earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), and reducing reliance on government subsidies to achieve long-term financial viability.
In its latest financial report, Uganda Airlines recorded a net loss of Ush237 billion ($66.7 million) for the fiscal year ending June 2024. Losses are projected to increase by 14 percent to Ush271.1 billion ($76.25 million) in the year ending June 2025. These ongoing losses have attracted parliamentary scrutiny, where legislators recently approved $119 million for pre-delivery payments on the new Boeing aircraft, signaling expectations for a turnaround and an end to the airline’s prolonged start-up deficits.
Future Growth and Regional Ambitions
With the planned fleet expansion, Uganda Airlines aims to broaden its route network, focusing on long-haul destinations such as New York, alongside key cities in Europe and the Middle East. While awaiting the arrival of the new jets, the airline is implementing phased route development, workforce expansion, and infrastructure upgrades to support sustainable and commercially viable growth.
Wake noted that several priority growth markets have been identified and are being developed in phases, contingent on regulatory approvals, market readiness, and fleet availability. These initiatives are designed to strengthen Entebbe International Airport’s position as a regional aviation hub and underpin Uganda Airlines’ long-term financial health.
