UK police service orders two more Airbus H135 helicopters

UK Police Service Expands Fleet with Additional Airbus H135 Helicopters
The United Kingdom’s National Police Air Service (NPAS) has placed a firm order for two more Airbus H135 helicopters, further advancing its fleet renewal initiative. This acquisition brings the total number of H135 aircraft under the program to nine. The order is part of a 2025 Framework Contract established with BlueLight Commercial, the government procurement agency responsible for emergency services, which designates Airbus as the exclusive helicopter supplier for NPAS for up to six years.
Delivery and Operational Integration
The newly ordered helicopters are expected to be delivered to Airbus’ Oxford facility in 2028, where they will undergo customization to meet the specific operational requirements of NPAS. Each aircraft will be equipped with Airbus’ state-of-the-art Helionix avionics system. NPAS pilots have already begun training and familiarization flights to ensure a seamless integration of the new technology into their operational routines.
Chief Superintendent Fiona Gaffney, NPAS Accountable Manager, highlighted the strategic importance of the new helicopters, noting that they “will provide a modern, resilient and effective capability for policing, supporting our crews as they respond to incidents, assist officers on the ground and protect the public.”
Current Fleet and Support Infrastructure
At present, NPAS operates a fleet comprising 16 H135 and four H145 helicopters, deployed across 14 bases and serving 43 police forces throughout England and Wales. Airbus Helicopters UK continues to provide comprehensive maintenance and support services for the NPAS fleet. The first two helicopters from the current renewal program arrived at Airbus Helicopters’ UK facility in April for customization tailored to policing needs.
Challenges and Market Implications
While the expansion is set to enhance NPAS’s aerial policing capabilities, it also presents logistical and training challenges. Ensuring that pilots and support personnel are fully prepared to operate and maintain the updated systems remains a priority as the fleet grows. Furthermore, this order may have broader implications for the H135 market, potentially increasing demand and influencing pricing and supply chain dynamics. The move could also prompt competitive responses from other police services and private operators within the UK, possibly leading to intensified competition among helicopter manufacturers.
Globally, the Airbus H135 continues to be a preferred platform for law enforcement and emergency services, with over 1,470 units in operation and more than eight million flight hours logged across more than 325 customers worldwide.
