Jackson County Airport to Open Free Aviation Maintenance School
Addressing Workforce Shortages Through Education
Jackson County Airport in Michigan is set to launch a free aviation maintenance technician school targeting high school juniors and seniors. The 13-month program, commencing next fall, will provide students with the necessary education and training to qualify for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) aviation maintenance technician license before they graduate. The inaugural class will enroll 30 students, offering a direct and cost-free pathway into a licensed career in aircraft maintenance.
Airport Manager Juan Zapata emphasized the dual purpose of the initiative: to offer local students a valuable trade opportunity and to help alleviate the growing national shortage of skilled aviation technicians. “We felt that our high school students needed another option locally to go into a trade,” Zapata explained. “We wanted to start a new trade school that would allow a high school student, before they graduate, to get all the requirements in education so they can apply for an aviation maintenance technician license.”
Industry Challenges and Workforce Demand
The aviation sector is facing an increasingly urgent need for qualified maintenance personnel. Federal projections suggest that by 2028, the United States could experience a 20% shortfall in aircraft maintenance technicians. In response, the FAA has recently lowered the required training hours for licensure from 2,400 to 1,900, aiming to expedite the entry of new technicians into the workforce.
Haleigh Sanders, a maintenance worker at Jackson County Airport, highlighted the severity of the shortage, particularly at larger airports. “There is a huge need for it. The shortage is insane right now,” she said. While Jackson County Airport is currently managing its maintenance demands, major hubs such as Detroit Metropolitan Airport are struggling to maintain operations, sometimes resulting in flight reductions due to insufficient technician availability.
Evolving Industry Landscape and Future Prospects
The launch of the Jackson County program coincides with significant shifts and challenges within the aviation maintenance sector. Workforce reductions at Supernal, Hyundai’s electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) subsidiary, underscore ongoing pressures related to labor and supply chain constraints. Concurrently, NASA’s initiatives to modernize maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) reflect the increasing importance of advanced training and technological integration in the field. The industry is also rapidly adopting predictive maintenance technologies, despite concerns over privacy and security, signaling a competitive and evolving market environment.
Consolidation trends are further reshaping the MRO sector. Companies such as West Star Aviation have expanded their footprint in the Mid-Atlantic region through strategic acquisitions, highlighting the growing demand for specialized training and expertise to meet complex industry requirements.
Despite these challenges, the outlook for new aviation maintenance technicians remains positive. Entry-level technicians earn an average annual salary of $70,000, and graduates of similar programs often receive multiple job offers. The Jackson County Airport’s program, delayed by last year’s government shutdown, aims to equip local students with the skills and credentials necessary to succeed in a rapidly changing aviation industry.
