Ranking the World’s Top 8 Commercial Jet Manufacturers by Aircraft Produced
Estimating the total number of commercial airliners produced by each manufacturer presents a complex challenge, given decades of mergers, acquisitions, and evolving industry dynamics. For example, Boeing’s production figures now encompass those of McDonnell Douglas, which it acquired in 1997, while Airbus itself emerged from a series of European aerospace mergers. This often results in overlapping counts, as both pre- and post-merger outputs are included in the tallies.
The following analysis highlights the companies that have produced the greatest number of commercial jet-powered aircraft, alongside recent developments shaping the global aerospace industry.
Historical Manufacturers and Their Contributions
Fokker, the Dutch aircraft manufacturer, produced approximately 570 commercial jets during its operational years. Its notable models include the F28 Fellowship with 241 units, the Fokker 70 with 47 units, and the Fokker 100 with around 280 units. The company ceased operations in 1996 following bankruptcy. Other manufacturers that narrowly missed this ranking include Convair, with 413 jets such as the Convair 880 and 990 Coronado, and Lockheed, which produced 250 jets including the L-1011 TriStar.
Ilyushin, a prominent Soviet-era manufacturer, delivered roughly 432 commercial passenger jets. This total comprises 292 Il-62s, 106 Il-86s, and 34 Il-96s. Although the Il-76 airlifter exceeded 1,000 units, it is primarily a military aircraft and thus excluded from commercial jet counts. Currently, Ilyushin is attempting to revive the Il-114 regional turboprop; however, as a turboprop, it does not qualify for this ranking.
The British aerospace lineage, encompassing British Aerospace (BAe), de Havilland, Hawker Siddeley, and BAC, produced an estimated 805 commercial jets. This includes 114 de Havilland Comets—the world’s first commercial jet airliner—127 Hawker Siddeley Tridents, 387 BAe/Avro RJs, and 244 BAC One-Elevens. Additionally, 54 BAC One-Elevens were manufactured under license in Romania, potentially raising the total to 862. Although the UK no longer produces complete commercial jets, its aerospace sector continues to exert significant influence in global aviation.
Emerging Players and Industry Dynamics
The commercial jetliner market is undergoing significant transformation, with new entrants and shifting alliances challenging established players. Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) recently signed a memorandum of understanding to manufacture the Sukhoi Superjet-100 (SJ-100) in India. This collaboration signals ambitions to compete with industry giants such as Boeing and Airbus.
China’s Commercial Aircraft Corporation (COMAC) is also striving to establish itself with the C919 jet. However, ongoing US-China trade tensions have delayed deliveries, underscoring the geopolitical complexities confronting emerging manufacturers.
Industry Leaders: Airbus and Boeing
Airbus and Boeing continue to dominate commercial jet production worldwide. Airbus recently reported strong third-quarter core operating profits and reaffirmed its delivery targets for 2025, although it has scaled back its production goals for the A220. Boeing is ramping up output of its 787 Dreamliner at its South Carolina facility to meet increasing demand, despite facing recent production challenges.
As the aerospace industry evolves, both legacy manufacturers and emerging competitors navigate a landscape shaped by technological innovation, international partnerships, and shifting global dynamics. The rankings of the world’s top commercial jet manufacturers reflect not only historical achievements but also the ongoing competition to define the future of air travel.
