AAR Expands EAGLE Career Pathway Program with Legacy Aviation Learning Center
AAR CORP. has formalized a partnership with Legacy Aviation Learning Center through a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), extending its EAGLE Career Pathway program to Traverse City, Michigan. This expansion enhances AAR’s network of educational collaborators and seeks to address the persistent industry-wide demand for skilled aviation maintenance technicians (AMTs).
Strengthening Workforce Development through Education
Since its inception in 2018, the EAGLE Career Pathway program has partnered with educational institutions across the United States to establish direct pipelines from academic training to AAR’s Airframe Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities. The agreement with Legacy Aviation Learning Center is a significant step in connecting more students with career opportunities in aviation maintenance, underscoring AAR’s ongoing commitment to workforce development.
At a recent graduation ceremony for Legacy Aviation’s 24 Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) program graduates, Tom Hoferer, AAR’s Senior Vice President of Repair & Engineering, emphasized the importance of the collaboration. He praised the graduates for completing a “paradigm-shifting program” within 11 months and encouraged them to cultivate curiosity, innovation, teamwork, and connection—qualities he identified as essential for success in the aviation sector.
Legacy Aviation’s A&P program is among the first to adopt the new FAA Part 147 curriculum, which shifts the focus from traditional time-based training to competency-based learning. This modernized approach, supported by AAR and other industry leaders, aims to better align educational outcomes with current industry requirements and expedite the certification process for future AMTs.
Ryan Goertzen, AAR’s Vice President of Maintenance Workforce Development, highlighted Legacy Aviation’s innovative use of the new FAA regulations, noting that the institution is leveraging diverse pedagogical methods to train students more efficiently and effectively for careers in aviation.
Peter Lane, President and CEO of Legacy Aviation, reflected on the partnership’s significance, stating that collaborating with AAR CORP., North America’s largest MRO company, reinforces the shared commitment to training future mechanics and expanding career opportunities. He expressed pride and enthusiasm in announcing the partnership to the local community.
Strategic Growth Amid Industry Challenges
AAR’s expansion of the EAGLE program aligns with a broader strategic initiative to enhance its maintenance, repair, and operations capabilities. Recent acquisitions, including the MRO software provider Trax and the AAR-Indamer deal, demonstrate the company’s intent to strengthen its market position and integrate advanced technologies into its service offerings.
Nonetheless, the expansion presents several challenges. Integrating new training technologies with existing systems, maintaining alignment with evolving industry standards, and managing potential resistance from employees accustomed to traditional methods are critical hurdles that AAR must navigate. Despite these obstacles, the initiative is poised to bolster investor confidence in AAR’s long-term workforce strategy. It may also prompt competitors to enhance their own training programs or invest in similar initiatives to maintain market competitiveness.
In addition to the Legacy Aviation partnership, AAR recently signed a comparable MOU with US Aviation Academy in Denton, Texas. This agreement provides students enrolled in US Aviation Academy’s FAA-approved A&P programs nationwide with access to career pathways, mentoring, and leadership development opportunities at AAR’s Airframe MRO facilities.
Through these partnerships and strategic investments, AAR continues to solidify its position as a leader in aviation workforce development and MRO services.
