AerCap Leases Two Airbus A321neo Aircraft to Uzbekistan’s My Freighter
Strategic Partnership to Support Uzbekistan’s Aviation Ambitions
Dublin-based AerCap Holdings N.V. (NYSE: AER), the world’s largest aviation leasing company, has signed lease agreements for two new Airbus A321neo aircraft with My Freighter, a cargo airline headquartered in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The aircraft are slated for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2027. This marks AerCap’s inaugural partnership in Uzbekistan, aligning with the country’s strategic goal to position Tashkent as a pivotal aviation hub bridging East and West.
Peter Anderson, AerCap’s Chief Commercial Officer, emphasized the significance of the deal, stating that the A321neo’s fuel efficiency and extended range will be instrumental in enabling My Freighter and its passenger brand, Centrum Air, to expand their market reach. The agreement underscores AerCap’s commitment to supporting the growth of the local aviation sector and enhancing Uzbekistan’s connectivity on the global stage.
Expanding Fleet and Network Capabilities
Abdulaziz Abdurakhmanov, Chairman and CEO of Centrum Holding, which backs both My Freighter and Centrum Air, highlighted the operational benefits the new aircraft will bring. He noted that the Airbus A321neos will bolster the airline’s capabilities and facilitate the launch of new international routes, including planned services to Europe. The enhanced efficiency and range of the A321neo are expected to improve passenger comfort and broaden travel options, further integrating Uzbekistan into key global markets.
My Freighter, established in 2020, operates scheduled and chartered cargo flights across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, specializing in the transport of perishable goods and hazardous materials. It holds the distinction of being the first Uzbek carrier certified under CCAR-129, playing a vital role in connecting international trade corridors. Centrum Air, launched in January 2023 under My Freighter’s Air Operator Certificate, is Uzbekistan’s largest private airline, operating a modern all-Airbus fleet and serving destinations across Central Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and China.
Industry Context and Challenges Ahead
The lease agreement arrives amid ongoing challenges in the aviation leasing sector, including fleet transitions, aircraft maintenance, and market volatility. AerCap’s extensive global customer base of approximately 300 airlines positions it well to manage these complexities, yet the financial implications of integrating new aircraft types may invite scrutiny regarding My Freighter’s operational costs and long-term financial sustainability. Analysts suggest that this deal could also trigger competitive responses from other lessors, potentially intensifying contract negotiations and pricing dynamics within the industry.
As both AerCap and My Freighter embark on this partnership, they will need to carefully navigate operational, financial, and competitive factors to realize the full potential of their collaboration and contribute to the development of Uzbekistan’s aviation landscape.
