Air India Flight Deviates from Runway During Mumbai Landing; Passengers Unharmed
An Air India flight traveling from Kochi to Mumbai veered off the main runway while landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Monday morning amid heavy rainfall. The Airbus A320, operating as flight AI-2744, skidded approximately 16 to 17 metres off course after touchdown on Runway 27 at 9:27 am. Despite the excursion, all 139 passengers and crew on board were unharmed.
Incident Details and Immediate Response
The aircraft traversed an unpaved area before coming to a stop on a taxiway. During this sequence, three tyres burst and the engine cowling sustained damage, likely caused by contact with debris or soft ground. Following the incident, the plane was able to taxi safely to a parking bay where passengers and crew disembarked without injury. The aircraft has since been grounded for thorough inspection and necessary repairs.
Mumbai airport authorities promptly activated emergency response teams and temporarily closed the primary runway (09/27) to assess minor damages. To ensure continued airport operations, the secondary runway (14/32) was brought into service. A spokesperson for CSMIA emphasized that safety remains the highest priority for the airport.
Air India confirmed the event, noting that heavy rain during landing contributed to the runway excursion. The airline reiterated its commitment to passenger and crew safety, affirming that all individuals on board had safely disembarked.
Investigation and Broader Safety Concerns
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has initiated an investigation into the incident. The regulatory body has previously highlighted recurring safety concerns at major Indian airports and airlines following special audits. This latest runway excursion highlights persistent technical and operational challenges, particularly during the monsoon season when adverse weather conditions are frequent.
Runway excursions during inclement weather are not uncommon at Mumbai airport. A similar incident occurred in September 2023 when a VSR Ventures Learjet 45 veered off the runway amid heavy rain, causing significant operational disruptions.
The aviation sector in India continues to face pressure to enhance safety protocols and address technical shortcomings. Incidents such as this often lead to increased scrutiny from regulators and the public, potentially affecting passenger confidence. Airlines and airport authorities are under growing calls to implement more rigorous oversight and corrective measures to ensure the safety and reliability of air travel in the country.
