Argentina’s Flybondi to Wet-Lease Ten Aircraft

Argentina’s Flybondi to Wet-Lease Ten Aircraft Amid Intensifying Market Competition
Flybondi, the Argentine ultra-low-cost carrier based at Córdoba International Airport, has announced plans to wet-lease ten aircraft for the upcoming southern hemisphere summer season, running from December 2025 through March 2026. The airline intends to augment its fleet with a combination of Airbus A320-200s and Boeing 737-800s sourced from Avion Express Brasil, Avion Express, and ETF Airways. However, the precise distribution of aircraft among these lessors has not been disclosed.
Fleet Expansion and Operational Deployment
Of the ten leased aircraft, seven will be stationed in Buenos Aires, with the remaining three based in Córdoba. Currently, Flybondi operates a fleet of fourteen Boeing 737-800s owned in-house, alongside one wet-leased A320-200 (registration PR-MLD, msn 3601) from Avion Express Brasil, according to ADS-B tracking data. This marks the second consecutive year the airline has relied on wet-leasing narrowbody jets to meet peak summer demand, leveraging countercyclical leasing opportunities primarily sourced from Europe. In the previous summer season of 2024, Flybondi secured aircraft from Avion Express and Spain’s AlbaStar.
Flybondi’s CEO, Mauricio Sana, highlighted the scale of the expansion, stating, “Adding ten aircraft for the summer season will allow us to increase flights by 50% compared to 2024 and carry 56% more passengers. We aim for 2.8 million people to travel on our network.” This ambitious growth underscores the airline’s strategy to capture a larger share of the domestic travel market during the busy summer months.
Market Context and Competitive Dynamics
The decision to expand through wet-leasing comes amid significant shifts in the global aircraft leasing market. Major lessors such as Air Lease Corporation are undergoing transformative acquisitions, while new regulatory frameworks governing foreign wet-leasing are being introduced in key markets, including Russia. These developments are reshaping the competitive landscape and influencing the availability and terms of leasing agreements worldwide.
Within Argentina, Flybondi’s fleet augmentation is expected to intensify competition, particularly with rivals such as JetSmart, which has recently expanded its own fleet through leasing agreements with BOC Aviation. The increased capacity on domestic routes is likely to heighten competitive pressures during the peak travel season, raising the stakes for market share among low-cost carriers.
Leasing Partners and Operational Challenges
Data from ch-aviation indicates that Avion Express operates a fleet comprising fifteen A320-200s and one A321-200, while its Brazilian subsidiary, launched in 2025, currently maintains a single A320. Avion Express Malta manages thirty-eight A320-200s and one A321-200. Croatia-based ETF Airways contributes three Boeing 737-800s to the pool of aircraft available for wet-lease arrangements.
As Flybondi prepares for this substantial seasonal expansion, the airline faces several operational challenges. These include securing necessary regulatory approvals, integrating the leased aircraft into its existing operations, and maintaining service reliability amid rapid scaling. Navigating these complexities will be critical as Flybondi seeks to capitalize on the growing demand for air travel in Argentina’s domestic market.
