Chapman Freeborn Delivers Oversized Industrial Equipment from Belgium to China

Chapman Freeborn Executes Complex Airlift of Oversized Industrial Equipment from Belgium to China
Global air charter specialist Chapman Freeborn has successfully transported oversized industrial equipment from Belgium to China, overcoming significant logistical and market challenges. The shipment comprised 20-meter-long welded tubes designed for industrial heat exchangers, weighing approximately 700 kilograms. These were nose-loaded into a Boeing 747-400F at Liege Airport (LGG) and flown to Zhengzhou (CGO), China.
Navigating Technical and Operational Challenges
The client’s decision to opt for air cargo over ocean freight was driven by a tight delivery schedule and the delicate nature of the equipment. This choice reflects a broader trend within the mining and industrial equipment sectors, where increasing global demand and rapid technological integration necessitate faster and more reliable logistics solutions. However, the industry continues to face headwinds, including regulatory changes, shifting market dynamics, and the ongoing impact of trade disputes and tariffs. These factors complicate cross-border deliveries and heighten scrutiny over shipping costs and delivery timelines.
Chapman Freeborn’s team confronted multiple technical and operational hurdles to ensure the cargo’s safe and timely arrival. The welded tubes were shipped in a 20-meter-long crate, which made side-door loading impossible. Instead, the team utilized the Boeing 747-400F’s nose door, a method chosen for its suitability and cost-effectiveness for oversized freight. The loading process required meticulous coordination: two cranes facilitated the initial truck offload and build-up, followed by three high loaders operated by six ground staff for airside loading. Throughout the operation, Chapman Freeborn collaborated closely with Challenge Group, which provided experienced ground handling services at Liege Airport.
Flexibility and adaptability were critical, particularly when the final destination was changed at short notice from Shanghai (PVG) to Zhengzhou (CGO). Despite this last-minute adjustment, Chapman Freeborn efficiently managed export customs clearance and maintained direct flight representation, ensuring smooth operations and real-time updates for the client.
Industry Context and Company Expertise
Yoann Maugran, Sales Manager France at Chapman Freeborn Airchartering BV, emphasized the precision required in handling oversized shipments: “When a customer entrusts us with an oversized shipment, we understand that there is no room for error and that every detail counts. Oversized freight is often the most challenging part of our business, but also the most rewarding when a mission is successfully completed.”
This successful delivery occurs amid increasing pressure on the logistics sector from geopolitical tensions and evolving trade policies. Competitors are exploring alternative routes and transport modes to maintain market share, while clients remain vigilant regarding costs and delivery performance.
With over 50 years of experience in air cargo charter services, Chapman Freeborn continues to demonstrate its expertise in managing complex, oversized shipments. As part of Avia Solutions Group—the world’s largest ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) provider—Chapman Freeborn leverages a global network and extensive resources to serve a diverse clientele, including major corporations, governments, NGOs, and relief agencies.
