Africa’s Technology Sector Emerges as a Hub of Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Over the past decade, Africa’s technology industry has experienced a profound transformation, driven primarily by widespread mobile technology adoption and enhanced internet connectivity. These developments have created an environment ripe for innovation, enabling entrepreneurs across the continent to devise technological solutions that address everyday challenges and foster economic growth.
Mobile Technology and Economic Growth
Africa currently boasts 477 million unique mobile subscribers within a population of approximately 1.3 billion. This extensive mobile penetration has had a significant economic impact, with the mobile industry contributing an estimated $155 billion to the continent’s GDP in 2019, according to data from the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSMA). This growth underscores the critical role that mobile technology plays in connecting communities and facilitating commerce across diverse regions.
Nigeria’s Role as a Leading Tech Hub
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, has emerged as a central player in the continent’s technology ecosystem. The country is home to 90 tech hubs—the highest concentration in Africa—reflecting its status as a vibrant center for innovation. Nigerian startups attracted nearly $400 million in funding in 2019, more than doubling the previous year’s investment levels. Prominent companies such as Jumia, an online marketplace, and Andela, a talent accelerator, exemplify the dynamic entrepreneurial spirit driving Nigeria’s tech sector forward.
Co-Creation Hub and the Vision of Bosun Tijani
At the forefront of Africa’s tech revolution is Bosun Tijani, founder and CEO of Co-Creation Hub (CcHUB). Established in 2010, CcHUB has grown into one of the continent’s largest networks of technology talent, with operations spanning Nigeria, Kenya, and Rwanda. Tijani’s vision was to create a collaborative space where innovators could access the resources necessary to develop transformative technologies. The hub provides startups with workspace, mentorship, and funding, nurturing their growth into sustainable enterprises. One notable success story is Lifebank, a Nigerian health logistics company that benefited from CcHUB’s 18-month incubation program beginning in 2016.
Beyond supporting startups, Tijani has also prioritized STEM education through initiatives such as STEM Cafe in Lagos. This learning center aims to inspire children by engaging them in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics through a creativity-focused curriculum. Activities include coding challenges, computer games, and 3D printing prototyping, all designed to build “creative confidence” and encourage young learners to apply scientific principles to real-world problems.
Looking Ahead: Africa’s Growing Tech Influence
Africa’s technology landscape is evolving rapidly, propelled by a burgeoning community of entrepreneurs who are harnessing innovation to improve lives and drive economic development. With influential hubs like CcHUB and educational initiatives such as STEM Cafe, the continent is laying a strong foundation for sustained growth in the tech sector. This momentum positions Africa as an emerging force in the global technology arena, with the potential to shape the future of innovation on a worldwide scale.
