Ethiopian Airlines Orders 11 More Boeing 737 MAX 8 Aircraft

Ethiopian Airlines Expands Boeing 737 MAX 8 Fleet with New Order at Dubai Airshow
Ethiopian Airlines has announced an order for 11 additional Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, reinforcing its position as Africa’s largest carrier and operator of the continent’s youngest fleet. The announcement, made on November 17 during the 2025 Dubai Airshow, follows closely on the heels of Emirates’ substantial purchase of 65 Boeing 777-9s and Boeing’s confirmation of a feasibility study for a potential 777-10 model. This latest commitment brings Ethiopian’s total 737 MAX 8 orders to nearly 40, underscoring the airline’s continued confidence in Boeing despite previous challenges.
The airline already has close to 30 Boeing 737 MAX 8s on order, with deliveries scheduled through the end of the decade. This expansion highlights Ethiopian Airlines’ strategic focus on modernizing and growing its narrowbody fleet to meet increasing demand across its extensive network.
Fleet Expansion Amidst a Competitive Market Landscape
Ethiopian Airlines’ narrowbody fleet is currently dominated by the 737 MAX 8, with 22 aircraft in active service. The carrier also operates a mix of other Boeing 737 variants, including three 737-700s, seven passenger-configured 737-800s, one private 737-800, and four 737-800 freighters. On the widebody front, the airline’s fleet comprises six 777-200LRs, five 777-300ERs, 19 787-8s, and 10 787-9s. Its cargo operations rely on four 767 freighters and 12 777 freighters.
The decision to expand the 737 MAX 8 fleet comes amid intensifying competition in the global narrowbody market. African carriers such as Air Senegal are also pursuing growth with plans to acquire nine Boeing 737 MAX jets. Additionally, the emergence of new players like Embraer and the introduction of China’s Comac C919 at the Dubai Airshow are reshaping the dynamics of the single-aisle aircraft segment, compelling airlines to carefully evaluate their fleet strategies.
Navigating Past Challenges and Affirming Strategic Partnerships
Ethiopian Airlines’ renewed commitment to the 737 MAX program is particularly notable given the airline’s direct experience with the aircraft’s troubled history. The carrier was involved in one of the two fatal crashes that led to the global grounding of the 737 MAX in 2019. Legal and reputational repercussions continue to affect Boeing, including a recent jury ruling that ordered the company to pay $28 million to the family of a UN consultant who perished in the Ethiopian Airlines crash.
Despite these ongoing challenges, Ethiopian Airlines’ latest order represents a significant vote of confidence in Boeing’s products and partnership. At the Dubai Airshow press conference, Brad McMullen, Boeing’s Senior Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing, expressed appreciation for the airline’s “unwavering” support, highlighting their nearly 80-year relationship. McMullen emphasized that Boeing’s efficient and versatile aircraft will remain central to Ethiopian Airlines’ growth strategy.
Strategic Outlook and Market Positioning
Ethiopian Airlines currently deploys its 737 MAX 8 fleet across Africa, the Middle East, India, and Southern Europe. With the expanded order, the airline is well-positioned to pursue further network growth and strengthen its competitive edge. As the aviation industry continues to adapt to new market entrants and ongoing legal scrutiny, Ethiopian’s commitment to the 737 MAX 8 underscores both resilience and strategic ambition in a rapidly evolving global market.
