Finland Receives First Delivery of World’s Most Expensive Fighter Jet
FORT WORTH, Texas — Finland has taken delivery of its first F-35A Lightning II, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s largest defense procurement to date. The rollout ceremony at Lockheed Martin’s production facility near Fort Worth Alliance Airport was attended by senior Finnish and U.S. political and military officials, highlighting the strengthening defense partnership between the two nations.
The F-35A, recognized as the world’s most advanced and costly fighter jet, is set to replace Finland’s aging aircraft fleet and usher in a new era for the Finnish Air Force. This acquisition forms a cornerstone of Finland’s long-term strategy to modernize its air combat capabilities, providing enhanced survivability, sensor fusion, and networked operations specifically adapted to northern European operational environments.
Finnish defense authorities stress that the F-35 meets stringent national requirements for deterrence and joint operations, with design features enabling seamless integration across air, land, sea, space, and cyber domains. The Finnish Air Force plans to commence F-35 operations in 2026, following initial training and familiarization phases. Full operational capability will be achieved progressively as additional aircraft are delivered and personnel complete conversion training.
Strengthening NATO Integration and Industrial Impact
Finland’s induction of the F-35A coincides with its deepening integration into NATO-aligned air forces. The F-35 is already in service with multiple allied nations, facilitating shared tactics, logistics, and mission data. With 20 allied countries—13 of which are European—having selected the F-35, the program has become a central pillar of allied airpower. Finland’s planned fleet of 64 aircraft will be the largest in the region, significantly enhancing interoperability with neighboring countries and supporting joint missions during both exercises and operational deployments.
Military officials emphasize the F-35’s advanced information-sharing capabilities, which are expected to improve situational awareness and bolster both national defense and collective security commitments within NATO.
On the industrial front, Finnish companies and academic institutions are playing an increasingly prominent role in the global F-35 supply chain. More than 30 Finnish entities are engaged in industrial agreements focused on advanced manufacturing, maintenance, and technology transfer. Lockheed Martin has positioned Finnish firms as long-term contributors to the F-35 program, fostering innovation and economic growth. Globally, the F-35 enterprise now involves over 1,900 suppliers, with more than 1,270 jets operational and the fleet having surpassed one million flight hours across 50 bases.
Challenges and Competitive Landscape
Despite the strategic benefits, Finland faces challenges associated with the F-35 program, including high maintenance costs and the requirement for specialized training for both pilots and ground crews. The acquisition is anticipated to drive increased defense spending and deepen strategic partnerships with NATO allies.
The global expansion of the F-35 program is also intensifying competition in the advanced fighter jet market. Rival initiatives, such as the European Future Combat Air System (FCAS), recently discussed by French President Emmanuel Macron and German opposition leader Friedrich Merz, aim to develop enhanced capabilities in response to the growing prominence of the F-35.
The arrival of Finland’s first F-35A signals a significant strategic shift in northern European airpower. As Finland prepares to operate the region’s largest F-35 fleet, this development is poised to reinforce both national defense and NATO’s collective security while reshaping the competitive dynamics of military aviation.
