Morocco Proposes Partnership with Spain and UK to Develop Air Taxis
Morocco is intensifying its efforts to modernize its industrial base, with a strategic emphasis on the aeronautics sector. Having established itself as a leading hub in Africa’s aerospace industry, the country hosts over 150 manufacturing companies. Building on this foundation, Morocco is now targeting the emerging market for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, commonly known as air taxis, aiming to secure a prominent role through international collaboration.
Strategic Collaboration with Spain and the United Kingdom
The Moroccan government is actively pursuing a partnership with Spain and the United Kingdom to develop and manufacture air taxis, capitalizing on the expertise of key players from both countries. Central to this initiative is British firm Vertical Aerospace, recognized for its design and production of zero-emission eVTOL aircraft, and Spanish company Aciturri Aerostructures, a major supplier to aerospace giants including Boeing, Rolls-Royce, and Airbus. Vertical Aerospace is seeking a strategic agreement with Aciturri to produce structural components for its VX4 eVTOL model.
Under the proposed arrangement, Aciturri would be responsible for the design, supply, and engineering of all structural elements critical to the VX4. This aircraft is designed to accommodate four passengers and a pilot, boasting a range exceeding 150 kilometers and a cruising speed of 240 kilometers per hour. Spain has already announced plans to launch air taxi services, with potential routes connecting cities such as Malaga, Marbella, Ronda, Ceuta, and Melilla.
Morocco’s involvement in this project is further strengthened by Aciturri’s acquisition of GOAM Industrie, a Casablanca-based company specializing in high-precision aircraft engine components. This acquisition positions Morocco to actively participate in the rapidly expanding market for short-haul, on-demand flights, catering to both leisure and business travelers.
Challenges and Market Dynamics
Despite the promising prospects, the initiative faces significant challenges. Regulatory frameworks for air taxi operations remain underdeveloped, requiring new standards for certification, safety, and airspace management. The integration of advanced technologies across international partners adds layers of complexity to the project. Moreover, the market is becoming increasingly competitive, with companies such as Joby Aviation expanding their air taxi operations, potentially intensifying rivalry and influencing market dynamics.
Market responses to Morocco’s proposed partnership are expected to vary, influenced by assessments of the project’s potential benefits and risks. Competitors may respond by leveraging existing technologies or forging new alliances to safeguard their market positions. Nonetheless, Morocco’s collaboration with Spain and the UK highlights its ambition to lead the advancement of next-generation urban mobility solutions within Africa and on the global stage.
