MTU Maintenance and ANA Sign CFM56-7B MRO Agreement

MTU Maintenance Zhuhai and All Nippon Airways Extend CFM56-7B MRO Partnership
MTU Maintenance Zhuhai has secured a multi-year maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) contract with All Nippon Airways (ANA), Japan’s largest airline, covering the carrier’s fleet of CFM56-7B engines that power 47 Boeing 737NG aircraft. The agreement, which extends through 2032, encompasses approximately 100 engines and represents a significant extension of the longstanding collaboration between the two companies.
Strengthening a Longstanding Collaboration
This new contract builds upon a well-established partnership, notably marked last December when MTU Maintenance celebrated its network’s 25,000th shop visit with ANA at its Hannover facility, where ANA’s CF6-80C2 engines are serviced. Under the expanded agreement, MTU Maintenance Zhuhai will assume responsibility for the CFM56-7B engines, while repairs on engine parts and accessories will continue to be managed across MTU’s global network, including facilities in Vancouver and Hannover.
Hideaki Honda, vice president of global supplier relation and planning at ANA, emphasized the strategic advantage of the partnership, stating, “MTU’s people are specialists when it comes to engine MRO. Having such vast expertise for the CFM56 essentially in our backyard is a great advantage and ensures the smooth operation of ANA’s 737NG fleet.”
Martin Friis-Petersen, senior vice president of MRO programmes at MTU Aero Engines, highlighted the integrated nature of the collaboration: “Our work with ANA is truly a continuous network success. We see their CF6-80C2 engines in our Hannover shop and the CFM56 engines here in Zhuhai, while repairs on engine parts and accessories are done in Vancouver and MTU’s other dedicated repair facilities. We are thrilled that we can continue down this road with ANA for the foreseeable future.”
Gert Wagner, president and chief executive of MTU Maintenance Zhuhai, underscored the company’s accumulated expertise and commitment to service quality. “Over the years, we have amassed enormous know-how and experience on the CFM56-7B to satisfy any MRO demand ANA might have, and we are looking forward to working together and exchanging further insights as part of our ongoing and trusting relationship,” he said. Wagner also reaffirmed MTU’s dedication to technical excellence, aiming to ensure ANA’s fleet operates at peak efficiency with minimal downtime.
Market Context and Competitive Dynamics
The agreement arrives amid a competitive landscape in the MRO market for CFM56-7B engines. Industry analysts suggest that this high-profile contract may prompt rival MRO providers to enhance their service offerings, potentially intensifying competition for similar contracts within the Asia-Pacific region. Market responses are expected to include increased investment in advanced technologies and customer support initiatives as companies seek to expand their share of the engine maintenance sector.
Despite these pressures, both MTU Maintenance and ANA remain confident that their partnership—rooted in technical expertise, reliability, and a shared commitment to operational excellence—will continue to generate significant value in the years ahead.
