One Year After AI 171 Crash, Investigation Continues Amid Uncertainty
Ahmedabad — A year has passed since the devastating crash of Air India Flight AI 171, yet the families of the 260 victims remain engulfed in grief and frustration as the official investigation remains unresolved. The absence of definitive answers continues to fuel anguish and demands for transparency.
Families Demand Accountability and Transparency
For Parth Patel of Anand, June 12 marks more than just the anniversary of the tragedy that claimed his mother, uncle, and aunt. It serves as a painful reminder of what he describes as a “massive systemic failure.” The three had boarded the ill-fated Boeing 787 Dreamliner for a family trip to London, where his cousin was to receive her MBA degree. Patel expressed deep dissatisfaction with the progress of the investigation, stating, “A year has passed and we still do not have a final report or any real accountability. The promises of justice remain only words on paper.”
This sentiment resonates widely among other bereaved families. Devarsh Patel, who lost both parents in the crash, insists that the black box data be shared with relatives to provide closure and clarity on the cause of the disaster. “Even after a year, the agencies have failed to do so,” he lamented. Similarly, Anil Vyas from Rajasthan, who lost his daughter, is calling for all investigation data to be made public. David Christian, who lost his son and daughter-in-law, emphasized that the report is not merely a matter of closure but a fundamental right. “We deserve to know the cause of the crash,” he asserted.
Investigation Delays and Controversies
The inquiry, led by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), has been plagued by delays, with the final report still pending. Officials attribute the holdup primarily to the ongoing examination of the Boeing engines in the United States. However, the process has also been marred by controversy, with concerns raised about the integrity of the investigation and potential conflicts of interest.
The prolonged absence of answers has intensified the suffering of families, many of whom have yet to receive the personal belongings of their loved ones. Although ex gratia compensation has reportedly been disbursed to 91% of the families, most emphasize that financial settlements cannot substitute for truth and accountability.
The crash has further tarnished Air India’s reputation, which was already weakened by operational lapses and safety violations. The airline’s public image remains damaged, and the ongoing investigation has done little to restore confidence among passengers and the wider public.
Awaiting Closure Amid Lingering Questions
A status report from the AAIB is anticipated this week, with officials promising a comprehensive final report within the next three months. Yet, for survivors and families, the wait for clarity and justice continues unabated. Rajesh Avaiya of Surat, who lost his younger brother and fiancée, voiced the collective frustration: “Is there anything so serious in that report that it cannot be shared? We just want the truth.”
As the investigation remains shrouded in uncertainty, the hope endures that the coming months will finally provide the closure that so many desperately seek.
