Porter Airlines Celebrates 19 Years of Innovation and Growth
Porter Airlines marks its 19th anniversary by reflecting on nearly two decades of steady expansion and innovation in the North American economy travel sector. Over the past year, the airline has significantly increased its workforce to more than 4,300 employees, adding 400 new team members. Its fleet now comprises 77 aircraft, including 48 Embraer E195-E2 jets, making Porter the largest global operator of this model, with plans to acquire up to 100 jets.
Expanding Network and New Markets
Porter has broadened its route network substantially, introducing 20 new routes in the last year and increasing its total destinations to 45 across 87 routes. In a notable strategic move, the airline will extend its reach beyond Canada and the United States in 2025 by launching flights to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America. This expansion will include 13 new routes originating from four Canadian airports. Additionally, Porter will commence significant operations at Hamilton International Airport in June 2025, becoming the only airline to offer scheduled flights from all three major airports in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area: Toronto Pearson, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, and Hamilton.
Founded at Billy Bishop Airport, Porter remains the dominant carrier at this downtown Toronto hub, operating 15 non-stop routes that enhance regional connectivity across Eastern Canada and key U.S. cities. Its growing presence is further supported by expanding services at Toronto Pearson, Hamilton, Ottawa, Montreal, and Halifax airports.
Navigating Intensifying Competition
Porter’s growth occurs amid increasing competition, particularly from Air Canada’s assertive expansion at Billy Bishop Airport. This rivalry may trigger price wars and heightened market tensions. In response, Porter is expected to enhance its service offerings and seek improved operational agreements to sustain its competitive edge and continue attracting passengers.
Setting New Standards in Economy Travel
Porter has distinguished itself as the first North American airline to offer an elevated economy experience, characterized by the absence of middle seats, complimentary beer and wine served in glassware, and premium snacks on every flight. These customer-focused innovations have established new benchmarks for economy travel and earned Porter international recognition. The airline has been ranked among the top three regional airlines worldwide by APEX, named Best Regional Airline in North America by SkyTrax, and received accolades such as USA Today Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Economy Class, Baxter Media Agents’ Choice Awards for Favourite Airline in Economy Class, and PAX International’s Most Improved Airline in North America.
Michael Deluce, CEO of Porter Airlines, emphasized the role of the airline’s workforce in its success, stating, “Our team members are the driving force behind our continued growth and success. Over the past 19 years, we’ve led the way by introducing meaningful customer experience benefits that others are replicating, while creating even more opportunities for our people and more choices for passengers. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished so far and look forward to greater successes as we enter our 20th year.”
Strengthening National Presence and Partnerships
Porter has also enhanced its national footprint through the launch of the BMO VIPorter Mastercard lineup, providing Canadians with new opportunities to earn travel rewards. The airline has expanded its partnerships with carriers such as Air Transat, American Airlines, and Alaska Airlines, further improving connectivity for travelers beyond Canadian borders.
