Philippine Airlines and AFI KLM E&M Extend GE90 Engine Partnership

Philippine Airlines and AFI KLM E&M Renew GE90 Engine Maintenance Partnership
Philippine Airlines and Air France Industries KLM Engineering & Maintenance (AFI KLM E&M) have extended and expanded their longstanding maintenance agreement for the airline’s GE90 engines, reinforcing one of the Asia-Pacific region’s most enduring partnerships in this sector. The contract amendment was formalized on March 25, 2026, at Philippine Airlines’ headquarters in Manila.
As an early adopter of the GE90 engine in the Asia-Pacific market, Philippine Airlines continues to depend on AFI KLM E&M’s technical expertise to support the next stage of its fleet lifecycle. The renewed agreement encompasses comprehensive long-term support, including scheduled shop visits, predictive maintenance solutions, spare parts provisioning, on-wing services (OWS), and engine Line Replaceable Unit (LRU) pool support. This enhanced framework is specifically designed to address the operational and cost-efficiency challenges associated with a fleet entering a mature phase.
Strategic Partnership Amid Industry Challenges
The extension of this partnership occurs against a backdrop of significant industry pressures. Philippine Airlines has recently issued warnings about a difficult second quarter, citing rising fuel prices and a looming national fuel crisis as factors likely to increase operational costs and complicate fleet management. The decision to reaffirm its collaboration with AFI KLM E&M reflects a strategic effort to maintain operational reliability and control costs amid these external challenges.
The wider aviation market is also responding to ongoing difficulties with Pratt & Whitney’s GTF engines, which have driven increased demand for maintenance services from providers such as MTU Aero Engines. Competitors are adjusting their fleet and maintenance strategies accordingly, as exemplified by KLM Cityhopper’s recent updates. Within this context, Philippine Airlines’ strengthened partnership with AFI KLM E&M positions the airline to sustain operational resilience and capitalize on advanced repair technologies to maintain a competitive advantage.
Beyond the GE90 engines, the collaboration extends to support for the CFM56-5B engines powering Philippine Airlines’ A320 fleet, with a dedicated local OWS Corner established to provide tailored maintenance services.
Alvin Kendrich Limqueco, Senior Vice President-Chief Supply Chain Officer and Data Privacy Officer at Philippine Airlines, emphasized the importance of the renewed agreement, stating, “Renewing our GE90 support agreement with AFI KLM E&M helps ensure seamless operations, dependable service, and solutions suitable to our evolving fleet. Their expertise and deep insight into our operations make them a truly reliable partner.”
Pierre Teboul, Senior Vice President Commercial at AFI KLM E&M, added, “Continuing our support for Philippine Airlines, a pioneering GE90 operator in the Asia-Pacific region, is a true privilege. This renewed agreement highlights the strong mutual trust we have built over the years and demonstrates our ability to adapt our solutions to the evolving needs of a mature fleet. Our teams remain fully committed to delivering performance, reliability, and long-term value.”
