Syensqo Celebrates Two-Year Partnership with Climate Impulse
Syensqo marks the second anniversary of its strategic collaboration with Climate Impulse, the groundbreaking initiative led by explorers Bertrand Piccard and Raphaël Dinelli. The project aims to accomplish the world’s first non-stop, zero-emission, round-the-world flight powered entirely by green hydrogen. This partnership has reached a pivotal milestone with Syensqo’s Aquivion® ion-exchange polymer now confirmed as a critical component in the fuel cell membrane electrode assembly, enhancing the aircraft’s range and overall performance.
Advancing Hydrogen-Powered Aviation
The aircraft’s major structural components—including the wings, cockpit, and fuselage—are being manufactured using Syensqo’s advanced composite materials at their facility in Les Sables d’Olonne, France. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of the year, with initial test flights planned in Châteauroux, France. As the primary technology partner, Syensqo contributes its expertise in advanced materials, application engineering, and system-level co-development, focusing on solutions tailored to the rigorous demands of hydrogen-powered aviation.
Syensqo’s green hydrogen laboratory in Bollate, Italy, plays a vital role in supporting research, testing, and validation throughout the hydrogen value chain. This facility accelerates development timelines and mitigates risks associated with emerging technologies, underscoring Syensqo’s commitment to innovation and sustainable progress.
Mike Radossich, CEO of Syensqo, emphasized the significance of the partnership, stating, “Climate Impulse exemplifies how science, innovation, and partnership can come together to address some of the most complex challenges of our time. With our lightweight composite materials and our ion-exchange polymer at the heart of the aircraft’s power system, we are demonstrating how advanced materials can turn the ambition of zero-emission, non-stop, round-the-world flight into reality.”
Bertrand Piccard, Chairman and Initiator of Climate Impulse, echoed this sentiment, noting, “Syensqo is a major strategic and technological partner, without whom the Climate Impulse project could not have been announced or even considered. Together, we are showing that high-tech lightweight materials can enable solutions once considered impossible, including clean, long-range aviation.”
Navigating a Competitive and Dynamic Market
Syensqo’s advancements come amid intensifying competition and evolving market dynamics. The recent acquisition of carbon removal competitor Eion by Terradot, supported by prominent investors such as Google and Microsoft, highlights a market environment where securing large-scale contracts and maintaining investor confidence are increasingly crucial. This development places pressure on Syensqo to scale its operations and forge significant partnerships to sustain its competitive position.
Moreover, volatility in commodity markets, exemplified by cocoa price fluctuations affecting companies like Mondelez, underscores the necessity for Syensqo to remain agile in responding to external market changes. The multi-year artificial intelligence partnership between Syngenta and SAP SE to modernize supply chains further illustrates the growing importance of technological innovation and adaptability—areas in which Syensqo must continue to invest to maintain its leadership.
The Climate Impulse mission, led by Piccard and Dinelli, seeks to demonstrate that zero-emission aviation is an attainable goal rather than a distant aspiration. This initiative aligns closely with Syensqo’s One Planet roadmap, reflecting the company’s ambition to drive decarbonization across industries while navigating an increasingly competitive and dynamic global landscape.
