ACI-NA Recognizes David Edwards and Daren Griffin for Industry Innovation
Celebrating Visionary Leadership in Aviation
Airports Council International – North America (ACI-NA), the foremost trade association representing commercial service airports across the United States and Canada, has, for the first time, honored two individuals with its distinguished Excellence in Visionary Leadership Award. David Edwards, President and CEO of Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP), and Daren Griffin, President and CEO of the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority, were jointly recognized for their exceptional leadership and innovative contributions to the aviation sector. The awards were presented on Sunday, October 26, during the 2025 ACI-NA & ACI World Annual General Assembly, Conference and Exhibition held in Toronto, Ontario.
Kevin M. Burke, ACI-NA President and CEO, praised the recipients, stating, “Daren Griffin and Dave Edwards truly embody what it means to be a leader in the aviation industry. Through their dedication and hard work, we’ve seen both the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport and the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority transform, not only advancing their cities’ communities, but the airport industry at large.”
David Edwards: Driving Growth and Innovation at Greenville-Spartanburg
David N. Edwards, Jr. brings over 30 years of experience in airport management, with a broad expertise encompassing business development, operations, governmental affairs, and international marketing. Since assuming leadership of the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport District in 2009, Edwards has overseen a remarkable period of growth and transformation. Under his stewardship, district revenues increased from $18.9 million to $72.2 million, while annual passenger enplanements more than doubled to nearly 1.45 million. Additionally, GSP has emerged as a top 25 U.S. cargo airport by international trade value and volume.
Edwards’ tenure has been distinguished by the successful attraction of new carriers, including Southwest Airlines, Avelo Airlines, and Breeze Airways, as well as the introduction of the airport’s first nonstop service to the West Coast. More than $400 million in infrastructure investments have modernized the terminal, expanded cargo facilities, and enhanced roadways and parking. Edwards also pioneered innovative business models, such as establishing Cerulean Commercial Aviation to manage general aviation, cargo, and fueling operations, alongside a revamped approach to food and beverage services aimed at improving the passenger experience. The airport district’s workforce expanded from 85 to 240 full-time employees, positioning GSP among South Carolina’s top 50 employers. Reflecting these accomplishments, GSP has been named Best Airport in North America by its passengers in three of the past four years.
Leadership Amid Industry Challenges
The recognition of Edwards and Griffin arrives at a critical juncture for the aviation industry, which continues to grapple with uneven global passenger traffic growth, geopolitical uncertainties, and shifting macroeconomic conditions. Their leadership underscores the vital role of innovation and adaptability in navigating these complexities. Industry analysts suggest that this acknowledgment may stimulate greater investor confidence in visionary airport executives, while prompting competitors to accelerate their own innovation efforts or publicly commend the achievements of Edwards and Griffin as part of broader strategic initiatives.
As the aviation sector evolves, the accomplishments of these two leaders establish a high standard for visionary leadership, emphasizing the importance of innovation in shaping the future trajectory of air travel.
