Aditya Birla Group Seeks Approval for Aircraft Leasing in GIFT City

Aditya Birla Group Pursues Aircraft Leasing Operations in GIFT City
The Aditya Birla Group has taken a significant step towards entering the aircraft leasing sector through its newly formed entity, UHG Holdings IFSC Pvt Ltd, based in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City). The company has submitted an application to the GIFT-Multiservice Special Economic Zone Approval Committee seeking regulatory approval to commence leasing operations. This move marks the conglomerate’s strategic foray into the rapidly expanding aircraft finance ecosystem within the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) at GIFT City.
Formation and Structure of UHG Holdings
Incorporated on August 20, 2026, UHG Holdings is a joint venture comprising three key Aditya Birla Group companies: Hindalco Industries holding a 50% stake, UltraTech Cement with 41%, and Grasim Industries owning 9%. The company began with an initial paid-up capital of ₹10 lakh, with plans to augment its capital base through shareholder contributions and borrowings as it scales operations. UHG Holdings intends to operate under the regulatory oversight of the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA), focusing on acquiring aircraft and leasing them to airlines—a capital-intensive business that has garnered increasing attention in India’s aviation sector.
Context Within GIFT City’s Aircraft Leasing Ecosystem
The Aditya Birla Group’s entry into aircraft leasing comes amid growing momentum in GIFT City’s aviation finance landscape. Several prominent Indian business and airline groups have already established leasing entities within the IFSC. The Adani Group has set up aircraft leasing vehicles, while Tata Group’s Air India and IndiGo have created GIFT City-based subsidiaries to finance and lease aircraft. Akasa Air has also launched an IFSC leasing arm to support its fleet expansion. Unlike these airline-affiliated ventures, the Aditya Birla Group’s initiative is distinctive for being driven by a consortium of industrial companies, signaling a strategic diversification into specialized financial services.
Challenges and Competitive Landscape
Despite the promising opportunity, UHG Holdings faces considerable challenges in establishing itself within this competitive market. Securing regulatory approvals, developing a robust operational framework within GIFT City, and competing against well-established players in the aviation leasing sector will be critical hurdles. The competitive environment is intensifying, with existing participants likely to respond strategically to the entry of a major conglomerate such as the Aditya Birla Group.
Market Impact and Growth Prospects
The group’s move is expected to enhance GIFT City’s reputation as a burgeoning hub for financial and aviation services. The aircraft leasing sector within the IFSC has witnessed rapid expansion, with 37 leasing entities managing a combined portfolio of 412 aviation assets as of June 2026. These assets include 237 aircraft, 87 engines, and 85 auxiliary power units (APUs). Financing extended by International Banking Units to these entities reached $664.77 million by June 2026, nearly tripling from $234.6 million the previous year.
This development coincides with ambitious growth plans by Indian airlines. In May 2026, major carriers such as IndiGo, Air India, Akasa Air, and Star Air collectively committed to leasing approximately 199 additional aircraft valued between $12 billion and $16 billion through their GIFT City-based entities. This surge is projected to nearly triple the number of commercial aircraft leased via the IFSC, underscoring the sector’s rapid growth.
As aircraft leasing solidifies its role as a key pillar of GIFT City’s financial ecosystem, UHG Holdings will seek to establish a competitive position amid evolving market dynamics and intensifying competition.
