Air Cambodia Introduces Business Class on ATR 72-600

Air Cambodia to Introduce Business Class on ATR 72-600 Fleet
Air Cambodia is poised to become the launch customer for ATR’s innovative premium seating solution, the ‘X-Space Table,’ marking a significant advancement in regional air travel within Cambodia. This new seat, part of ATR’s HighLine collection of premium cabin interiors unveiled in 2023, offers a modular design that converts a standard dual economy seat into a single premium seat within minutes. Certification for the ‘X-Space Table’ is anticipated in the first quarter of 2027.
Following the delivery of its new ATR 72-600 aircraft in May 2025, Air Cambodia plans to retrofit the ‘X-Space Table’ across its fleet of three ATR aircraft in 2027. The airline’s new Business Class section will comprise four seats arranged in two rows with a one-by-one layout, ensuring each passenger benefits from direct access to both window and aisle, enhanced comfort, privacy, and individual stowage compartments.
Flexibility and Operational Agility
The ‘X-Space Table’ offers airlines the flexibility to rapidly switch between full economy and dual-class configurations, allowing swift adaptation to fluctuating passenger demand, seasonal variations, or charter-specific requirements with minimal downtime. This adaptability is expected to enable Air Cambodia to maintain operational agility while elevating the travel experience for its customers.
David Zhan, Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Air Cambodia, emphasized the strategic importance of this development, stating, “We are eager to introduce a new business class offering across our fleet of ATRs, as it will enable Air Cambodia to offer a more refined travel experience while maintaining the agility required in our operations. This solution supports our commitment to providing greater comfort and choice to passengers across Cambodia, while ensuring continuity of service with our single-aisle fleet. It also strengthens our ability to adapt to evolving travel needs.”
Nathalie Tarnaud Laude, Chief Executive Officer of ATR, highlighted the versatility of the ‘X-Space Table,’ noting, “The X-Space Table reflects ATR’s DNA of versatility, allowing operators to create new opportunities for ancillary revenue and adapt to evolving passenger expectations around comfort and inflight experience. We are grateful for Air Cambodia’s continued trust, and we are confident that their disruptive vision of air travel will make a significant difference for tomorrow’s regional aviation.”
Market Position and Challenges
Air Cambodia currently operates ATR aircraft on key regional routes including Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Ho Chi Minh City. The airline holds a three-star Skytrax rating for customer experience and is the first ATR operator to implement this specific dual-class configuration, joining a select group of carriers adopting ATR HighLine interiors.
Despite the promising prospects, the introduction of business class on the ATR 72-600 presents challenges. Air Cambodia must ensure competitive pricing relative to other regional carriers while managing the operational costs associated with premium services, particularly amid potential fluctuations in customer demand. The move is expected to attract increased interest from business travelers but may also prompt competitors such as Bangkok Airways—who have also ordered ATR 72-600s—to enhance their own business offerings or accelerate fleet renewal to maintain market share.
The broader regional aviation market is evolving, with airlines like Ethiopian Airlines leasing ATR 72-600s for Air Congo, reflecting a trend toward improved regional connectivity. This dynamic environment may influence Air Cambodia’s market strategy as it seeks to balance premium service offerings with operational efficiency.
ATR HighLine-equipped aircraft contribute to environmental sustainability by emitting 45% less CO2 per trip compared to similar-sized jets. This aligns with growing demand for elevated regional travel experiences that are also environmentally responsible. As Air Cambodia advances its business class initiative, it aims to establish a new benchmark for regional aviation in Southeast Asia.
