Air Canada to Acquire Airbus A350-1000 Widebody Aircraft

Air Canada to Expand Fleet with Airbus A350-1000 Widebody Aircraft
Air Canada has announced a significant advancement in its fleet modernization strategy with the planned acquisition of the Airbus A350-1000 widebody aircraft. The airline will initially add eight of these state-of-the-art aircraft to its fleet, with options to purchase an additional eight. Deliveries are scheduled to commence in the second half of 2030, marking a pivotal step in enhancing the airline’s long-haul capabilities.
Enhancing Long-Haul Operations and Network Flexibility
Mark Galardo, Air Canada’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, emphasized the strategic importance of the A350-1000 in the airline’s future operations. He highlighted the aircraft’s impressive range, increased payload capacity, and superior economics as key factors that will unlock new opportunities for long-haul travel. Galardo described the A350-1000 as a critical component in Air Canada’s evolving network, providing the flexibility needed to support a growing and diversified route structure. The aircraft is expected to play a central role in connecting Air Canada’s hubs and customers to global destinations over the coming decade.
John Di Bert, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, underscored the acquisition as a forward-looking investment aimed at improving the airline’s long-term cost efficiency. He noted that the A350-1000’s advanced design, including lighter materials and next-generation engines, will deliver significant fuel savings and operational reliability. These improvements align with Air Canada’s financial and environmental goals, supporting a sustainable and competitive global network. Di Bert also confirmed that the investment fits within the airline’s capital allocation framework, maintaining capital expenditures at or below 12 percent of revenues.
Advanced Technology and Passenger Comfort
The Airbus A350-1000 is powered by the Rolls-Royce XWB97 engine and constructed using lightweight materials, enabling an estimated 25 percent reduction in fuel consumption compared to previous generation aircraft. With a potential range of approximately 9,000 nautical miles, the aircraft is well-suited for ultra-long-haul routes. Airbus highlights the A350-1000 as offering the quietest twin-aisle cabin in the industry, designed with a cabin pressure equivalent to 6,000 feet altitude to reduce passenger fatigue and jet lag, thereby enhancing overall comfort.
Air Canada plans to equip the A350-1000 with the latest generation of in-flight entertainment systems and connectivity options. The aircraft will also feature the airline’s new cabin standard, which is set to be introduced later this year, promising an elevated travel experience for passengers.
Complementing a Diverse and Modern Fleet
This order for eight A350-1000 aircraft complements Air Canada’s existing fleet renewal efforts. The airline is preparing to introduce 14 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners later this year and will soon receive the first of 30 Airbus A321XLRs. Additionally, Air Canada continues to take delivery of the Canadian-assembled Airbus A220, with 23 aircraft remaining on a firm order of 65. The fleet expansion will also include five leased Boeing 737 MAX aircraft expected to enter service in 2026. All new aircraft will feature Air Canada’s next-generation cabin design and standards, reinforcing the airline’s commitment to modernizing its fleet and enhancing passenger experience.
