Airbus Pursues A220 Expansion and A350 Service Growth Amid Q1 Challenges
Strategic Expansion and Landmark Order
Airbus is advancing its expansion plans for the A220 program and aftermarket services despite encountering significant challenges in the first quarter of 2026. The European aerospace leader is on the verge of securing what could become the largest single order in the A220 program’s history, with AirAsia X expected to purchase up to 150 of the smaller jets. This potential agreement, anticipated to be finalized this week, marks a strategic pivot for AirAsia X, which has traditionally operated the larger A320 family. The airline intends to utilize the 100-to-160-seat A220 to develop new regional routes and broaden its network beyond major hubs, including establishing a new hub in Bahrain to serve as a gateway to Europe. For Airbus, this order would not only set a new record for the A220 but also reinforce its competitive stance against rivals Embraer and COMAC in the narrowbody aircraft market.
The timing of the AirAsia X deal has provided a welcome boost to Airbus, with shares rising over 4% to €44.20 following the announcement. This recovery comes after the stock had declined nearly 10% since the beginning of the year, reflecting investor concerns amid a difficult start to 2026.
Financial Performance and Operational Challenges
Airbus’s first-quarter results highlighted the difficulties it faces. Group revenue declined 7% year-on-year to €12.7 billion, with commercial aircraft revenues falling 11%. Adjusted operating profit experienced a steep 84% drop, driven by delivery slowdowns and ongoing supply chain disruptions, particularly affecting the A320neo family. Additional complications arose from administrative delays in China, which hindered aircraft handovers, alongside engine shortages and production bottlenecks that further constrained output.
Despite these operational headwinds, Airbus’s order book remains strong. The company closed the quarter with a record backlog exceeding 9,000 undelivered aircraft, supported by recent large orders such as China Southern Airlines’ commitment to 137 A320neo-family jets. This sustained demand for fuel-efficient narrowbodies underscores the resilience of the market, even as Airbus navigates persistent production challenges.
Aftermarket Services and Future Outlook
In an effort to mitigate the cyclical nature of aircraft sales, Airbus is intensifying its focus on aftermarket services. On May 3, the European Commission approved a joint venture between Airbus and Air France-KLM aimed at component maintenance for the A350 fleet. This partnership is designed to generate stable, recurring revenue streams and reduce dependence on new aircraft deliveries. Industry observers are closely monitoring forthcoming pricing strategies and the venture’s ability to attract external customers.
Looking forward, Airbus is preparing to introduce its new Airspace cabin across multiple fleets, including the A220, A350, A330, and A320neo, with initial installations planned for Air Canada, Lufthansa, and Qantas. The company remains cautious about broader market conditions and is vigilantly observing geopolitical developments in the Middle East.
Despite the operational turbulence experienced in the first quarter, Airbus has reaffirmed its full-year guidance, maintaining its expectation to deliver approximately 870 commercial aircraft in 2026. Achieving this target will depend on resolving supplier bottlenecks and sustaining strong order momentum throughout the year.
