Engine Blade-Out Failure Caused Ryanair Cabin Depressurization, Officials Say

Engine Blade-Out Failure Causes Ryanair Cabin Depressurization
A preliminary investigation has revealed that a Ryanair Boeing 737-8AS, operated by Malta Air, experienced an uncontained fan blade-out failure in its right engine shortly after departing Thessaloniki International Airport, Greece. The aircraft was en route to Memmingen, Germany, when fragments from the No. 2 engine penetrated the fuselage, resulting in rapid cabin depressurization. This information was detailed in a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report released on August 13, 2026.
The incident involved Ryanair Flight 1879, registered 9H-QEU, carrying 149 passengers—including one lap child—alongside two pilots and four cabin crew members. Following the engine failure, the flight crew promptly declared an emergency and returned safely to Thessaloniki, where the aircraft landed without further complications. However, one passenger sustained serious injuries after a cabin window was damaged during the event.
Investigation and Industry Response
Initial findings suggest that the engine had encountered five suspected bird strikes prior to the blade failure, prompting investigators to examine whether these incidents contributed to the mechanical breakdown. In response to the event, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has mandated inspections of similar engines across the fleet to evaluate potential risks and prevent future occurrences.
The investigation was initially conducted by Greece’s Hellenic Air and Railway Safety Investigation Authority (HARSIA) before responsibility was transferred to the NTSB. The inquiry is being supported by the FAA, Boeing, and GE Aerospace, with additional involvement from representatives of Greece, Malta, France, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), Malta Air, and Safran Aircraft Engines, in accordance with ICAO Annex 13 protocols.
The incident has drawn heightened scrutiny from aviation authorities and may lead to regulatory actions, including possible fines. Ryanair faces reputational challenges as market analysts anticipate a temporary decline in passenger confidence and potential increases in insurance premiums. Competitors are expected to respond by enhancing safety measures and issuing public reassurances to maintain traveler trust.
Officials emphasize that the investigation remains ongoing, and all information released to date is preliminary and subject to revision as further evidence is analyzed.
