First Airbus ACH160 Delivered in New Zealand After CAA Certification

First Airbus ACH160 Delivered in New Zealand Following CAA Certification
Auckland-based charter operator Advanced Flight has received New Zealand’s first Airbus ACH160 helicopter, marking a significant milestone after the aircraft’s recent type certification by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) on June 18. This delivery also represents the inaugural operation of the ACH160 in the Pacific region. Advanced Flight intends to utilize the helicopter for passenger transport services across both the North and South Islands, capitalizing on the aircraft’s advanced technology and enhanced comfort features.
Advanced Flight’s Commitment to Innovation and Safety
Keith Stephens, CEO and pilot at Advanced Flight, expressed pride in introducing the ACH160 to New Zealand, emphasizing the company’s ongoing partnership with Airbus. He described the delivery as a pivotal moment that reinforces their dedication to innovation, safety, and providing world-class aviation services. Stephens also highlighted the expertise of his team in operating sophisticated aircraft, positioning Advanced Flight at the forefront of the region’s aviation sector.
The ACH160, a variant of the H160 designed specifically for private and business aviation, is certified to carry up to ten passengers. Advanced Flight has chosen an eight-passenger configuration to maximize comfort, featuring expansive windows, a spacious cabin, and state-of-the-art technology. Christian Venzal, managing director of Airbus Helicopters for Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific, praised Advanced Flight’s endorsement of the ACH160 and celebrated the milestone as a significant achievement for the region.
Certification and Market Impact
New Zealand’s approval of the ACH160 adds to a growing list of international aviation authorities that have certified the platform, enabling operators across the country to expand their fleets with one of the world’s most advanced medium twin-engine helicopters. The H160 is engineered for optimal performance and safety, incorporating the Helionix avionics suite, which offers intuitive controls, enhanced situational awareness, and reduced pilot workload. Recent design enhancements have lowered the aircraft’s empty weight, allowing for an increased payload of 100 kilograms or an extended range of 60 nautical miles.
Environmental sustainability is a key aspect of the H160’s design, with an 18% reduction in fuel consumption and a 50% decrease in perceived noise levels. These improvements help minimize the helicopter’s impact on New Zealand’s pristine landscapes and local communities. Globally, the H160 serves a variety of mission profiles, including commercial passenger transport and medical evacuation, with over 65 units currently in operation worldwide.
Competitive Landscape and Industry Outlook
The introduction of the ACH160 into the New Zealand market occurs amid a competitive environment dominated by established business jets such as the Bombardier Challenger 850 and Gulfstream G700, both of which continue to enjoy strong market presence and recent successful deliveries. A recent report by Jefferies indicates tightening demand for business jets, suggesting a robust market that may influence operator decisions and competitive dynamics. In response, competitors may intensify marketing efforts or adjust pricing strategies to maintain market share.
Airbus’s delivery performance has been notably strong, with a 59% year-on-year increase in May, reflecting a buoyant market for new aircraft. The arrival of the ACH160 in New Zealand underscores the country’s expanding aviation sector and highlights Airbus’s growing global footprint.
