Hummel Aircraft Unveils Twin-Engine Part 103 Ultralight
Hummel Aircraft Company has introduced a groundbreaking addition to the ultralight aviation sector with the debut of the Multicruiser at AirVenture. Embodying the company’s ethos that “The Heart of Aviation is Experimentation,” the Multicruiser is an all-metal, twin-engine ultralight aircraft that remarkably weighs less than 254 pounds. This weight compliance ensures it meets the stringent FAA Part 103 ultralight regulations, despite featuring two engines, two propellers, and two starters.
Innovation Rooted in Family Leadership
Since acquiring Hummel Aircraft in January 2021, the Higgins family has been at the helm of the company’s strategic direction. Matt Higgins, an engineer and the current CEO, has spearheaded efforts to innovate beyond the company’s existing models, which included the single-engine Ultracruiser and the larger, faster Experimental/Amateur-Built H5. Don Higgins, serving as chief test pilot, and Laurie Higgins, overseeing logistics, complete the leadership team. While the previous models enjoyed success in both kit and ready-to-fly formats, Matt Higgins identified an opportunity to push the boundaries of ultralight design, particularly in terms of powerplant configuration.
The Multicruiser emerged from a challenge to create a true twin-engine, all-metal aircraft that could still adhere to the strict weight and performance limits imposed by Part 103. Starting with the lightweight Ultracruiser fuselage, the design incorporated a Volkswagen engine spinner at the nose, chosen for its simplicity and aesthetic appeal.
Engineering Excellence and Performance
After extensive evaluation of various engines, the team selected the Italian-made Simonini Mini-4, a compact single-cylinder, two-stroke engine delivering 23 horsepower while weighing only 23 pounds. Each engine’s fuel consumption is impressively low, at half a gallon of premixed gasoline per hour. To address the complexities of twin-engine operation, Matt and Don Higgins collaborated with Simonini to develop a counter-rotating variant of the Mini-4. This innovation eliminates the traditional “critical engine” problem, significantly enhancing safety in the event of an engine failure.
A critical focus of the engineering process was managing the aircraft’s minimum controllable airspeed (Vmc), a vital safety parameter during takeoff and low-speed flight for twin-engine aircraft. Initial test flights, conducted by Matt Higgins shortly before AirVenture, included high-speed taxi runs and brief hops above ground effect. Early performance data is encouraging, with a climb rate estimated between 600 and 800 feet per minute at 55 mph. Although the aircraft’s top speed will be limited to 63 mph to comply with Part 103 regulations, its design suggests potential for higher speeds.
Market Challenges and Future Prospects
Despite the technical achievements represented by the Multicruiser, Hummel Aircraft faces significant challenges in bringing the model to market. The ultralight segment is already competitive, with established manufacturers such as Epic Aircraft and Pipistrel offering innovative designs and holding type certificates. Market reception may be divided, as some ultralight enthusiasts welcome the introduction of a twin-engine option, while others remain loyal to existing brands. Competitors are likely to respond by enhancing their product offerings or launching new models to maintain market share.
Furthermore, Hummel must navigate ongoing regulatory requirements and potential supply chain disruptions, particularly those linked to Pratt & Whitney’s new engine family, which could impact production schedules and costs. As the Multicruiser moves forward, its success will depend not only on its engineering merits but also on Hummel Aircraft’s ability to adapt within a dynamic and competitive ultralight aviation market.
