Keyamo Finalizes Airbus Deal in France Following FG Approval of Aircraft Leasing Company
A high-level Nigerian aviation delegation, led by Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo, has successfully concluded significant agreements with Airbus and other French aviation institutions. This development follows the Federal Government’s recent approval of a national aircraft leasing company, an initiative designed to strengthen Nigeria’s domestic airlines by enhancing access to modern aircraft and promoting industry growth.
Strategic Engagements and Institutional Partnerships
The delegation comprised officials from the Ministry of Aviation, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and representatives from both public and private sectors, including a seven-member team from Isaac Balami University of Aeronautics and Management (IBUAM) and 7Star Global Hangar. During their visit to France, the group toured Airbus’ assembly plants for narrow-body and wide-body jets, as well as helicopter manufacturing facilities in Toulouse and Marseille. Airbus executives presented the latest advancements in jet and helicopter technology and expressed a keen interest in expanding their investment footprint within Nigeria and the wider West African region.
Minister Keyamo secured commitments for collaboration between Airbus and Nigerian institutions, encompassing student exchange programs and capacity development initiatives. An agreement was also reached to facilitate partnerships enabling Nigerian airlines to acquire new aircraft through a sovereign guarantee framework, recently approved by President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Ibom Air, an early beneficiary of this initiative, has already received two aircraft and anticipates the delivery of two more. Managing Director George Uriesi acknowledged the support from both the Nigerian government and Airbus in advancing the airline’s fleet modernization.
In addition, IBUAM engaged in discussions with École Nationale de l’Aviation Civile (ENAC), a leading European aerospace university and key Airbus partner, to establish a strategic partnership focused on technical training and manpower development. Isaac Balami, founding Chancellor of IBUAM, commended Minister Keyamo’s leadership, emphasizing the positive trajectory for Nigeria’s aviation sector under his stewardship. IBUAM, recently accredited by the National Universities Commission, has commenced academic activities and continues to attract students from Nigeria and abroad.
Implications for Nigeria’s Aviation Industry and Broader Market Context
The Federal Government’s endorsement of the national aircraft leasing company represents a pivotal shift in how Nigerian carriers finance and acquire aircraft. Minister Keyamo described the initiative as transformative for the industry, positioning Nigeria to better compete in a challenging aviation landscape. Nonetheless, the sector faces broader structural challenges common across Africa, including a heterogeneous fleet composition and intense competition from manufacturers such as Embraer. The continent’s aviation market remains fragmented, with operators contending with supply-chain constraints and evolving regulatory frameworks.
On the global stage, the aircraft leasing and manufacturing sectors are experiencing rapid change. Airbus recently appointed a new strategy chief as it pursues sustained growth amid ongoing production and supply-chain challenges. Concurrently, major industry developments—such as SMBC Aviation Capital’s acquisition of Air Lease and the joint venture between Air France and Airbus for A350 component services—underscore intensifying competition and strategic realignments within the sector.
At the conclusion of the visit, Mahmud Adamu, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, lauded the government’s dedication to advancing the sector and commended Airbus for its collaborative approach with Nigeria’s aviation industry. The agreements forged in France are anticipated to serve as a foundation for fleet modernization and capacity building across Nigeria’s aviation landscape.
